Tutorial 2 (FM)
1. Find fi(t), the instantaneous frequency of
Sketch fi(t) in the time interval [0, 1] s.
2. Sketch the instantaneous frequency fi(t) curve for 100 MHz carrier wave frequency modulated by a 1 kHz square wave that has a peak-to-peak voltage of 20 V and a frequency sensitivity constant kf of 9 kHz/V.
3. An FM signal is given by , where m(t) is a unipolar
square wave signal with a period of 1 s and a peak value of 1 V.
(i) Sketch the instantaneous frequency fi(t) in the time interval [0, 2] s. (ii) Sketch the corresponding FM signal in the time interval [0, 2] s. (iii) Calculate the maximum frequency deviation f. Repeat for polar square wave signal with the same period and peak value.
4. An angle modulated signal is given by .
Find the transmission bandwidth for the signal.
5. Consider an FM signal modulated by a sinusoidal signal with a frequency fm of 15 kHz and
modulation index = 0.5. Find the transmission bandwith using the Table of Bessel functions. Determine the percentage of power contained in this bandwidth.
6. Consider an FM signal with frequency sensitivity kf = 8
Hz/V and the modulating signal given by . The FM signal is passed through an ideal bandpass filter, which has a centre frequency of 1 kHz, a bandwidth of 56 Hz, and a gain of unity. Determine the normalised average power of the FM signal at (a) the bandpass filter input, (b) the bandpass filter output.
7. Design (with block diagram) an Armstrong indirect FM modulator to generate an FM
carrier with a carrier frequency of 86.4 MHz and f = 57.6 kHz. A narrow-band FM generator is available at a carrier frequency of 200 kHz and a frequency deviation f = 20 Hz. The stock room also has an oscillator with an adjustable frequency in the range of 10 to 11 MHz. There are also plenty of frequency doublers, triplers, and quintuplers (x 5).
General formula for AM x (t) m Given: E E m = = = = = E sin (2π f t) + E sin (2 π f m t) sin (2 π f c t) 2cos (2π f c t) + 0.5cos (2 π f m t) cos (2 π f c t) E / E
