News Analysis: Focusing on the “How”

On Sunday, October 27th, 2024, as part of his campaign, Donald Trump held a rally at Madison

Square Garden. The indoor arena was filled to capacity by “MAGA” (“Make America Great

Again”) supporters. This event marks the beginning of the final week of campaigning for the

former 45th President in a fiercely competitive presidential race. This event was reported among

the conservative, centrist, and liberal news organizations. In order to understand how news

outlets approach the covering of political events, it is vital to dissect their reporting without bias.

The goal is to analyze how facts and opinions become a blurred line when influenced by political

ideologies. An analysis will be conducted on how articles from The Guardian, The Hill, and Fox

news covered the Donald Trump rally at Madison Square Garden by examining the differences

in tone, focus and implications of their reporting.

Among the news outlets to report was The Guardian, a British Newspaper with a left leaning

bias. The title of the article, “Trump fills Madison Square Garden with anger, vitriol and racist

threats”, reflects the strongly stated opinions of the newspaper. They immediately begin the

article by highlighting the controversial comments made in the rally. This sets off the continuous

critical tone of the article. Quoting one of the speakers’ “jokes” about Puerto Rico. The article

emphasized the parallels between Trump’s rally and a particular Nazi rally held in 1939 at a New

York City venue that shares the name Madison Square Garden. The Hill, a centrist, US political

website, covered the rally as well. The article maintained a neutral tone, with an emphasis over

reporting rather than stating an opinion. The title, “5 takeaways from Trump’s Madison Square

Garden rally” reflects this neutrality. The article highlighted key takeaways from the rally. They

1
point out that Trump does not delve into policies and tends to repeat the same rhetoric from

previous speeches. After reporting on the rally, the article provides an unbiased overview of the

controversies surrounding it, without going into too much detail. Fox News, a conservative news

channel, covered the rally in a buoyant fashion. The article titled, “Trump, powerhouse guests

rock packed MSG with historic rally” reflects on the positive aspects of the rally like the guests,

the energy and attendance turnout. They highlighted his popularity and concentrated on Trump’s

statements regarding policy and immigration.

When comparing, there is a clear distinction in the tone and goals each article sets out to achieve.

For instance, The Guardian draws parallels to evoke a sense of alarm about the current political

atmosphere. Fox News portrays the rally as a success in order to energize their base. The Hill

gave an all-encompassing overview, informing rather than influencing readers.

Media has an imposing influence on politics. Events such as rallies and debates, are often subject

to scrutiny, exaggerated and altered in the media. This leads to a skewed perception of the

candidates and their stances. The reporting on former president Trump's most recent rally was no

different.
