Consider the equation and the relation “(x, y) R (0, 2)”, where R is read as “has distance 1 of”.
For example, “(0, 3) R (0, 2)”, that is, “(0, 3) has distance 1 of (0, 2)”. This relation can also be read as “the point (x, y) is on the circle
of radius 1 with center (0, 2)”. In other words: “(x, y) satisfies this equation , if and only if, (x, y) R (0, 2)”.
Does this equation determine a relation between x and y? Can the variable x can be seen as a function of y, like x=g(y)? Can the
variable y be expressed as a function of x, like y= h(x)? If these are possible, then what will be the domains for these two functions?
What are the graphs of these two functions?
Are there points of the coordinate axes that relate to (0, 2) by means of R?
Your Discussion should be a minimum of 250 words in length and not more than 750 words

Discussion post for Math 1202, Unit 1
Question: Consider the equation x^2+(y-2)^2=1 and the relation “(x, y) R (0, 2)”, where R is read as “has distance 1
of”.
For example, “(0, 3) R (0, 2)”, that is, “(0, 3) has distance 1 of (0, 2)”. This relation can also be read as “the point (x, y)
is on the circle of radius 1 with center (0, 2)”. In other words: “(x, y) satisfies this equation x^2+(y-2)^2=1 , if and only
if, (x, y) R (0, 2)”.

Does this equation determine a relation between x and y?

X^2+(Y-2)^2=1,
The relationship of X and Y is the circumference of a circle, with (0,2) at the center of that circle, and 1 being the Radius.
(X,Y) R (0,2)

Can the variable x can be seen as a function of y, like x=g(y)? Can the variable y be expressed as a function of x, like y=
h(x)?
Yes, There will be both a positive and a negative square root for each equation. Here I give 2 examples of x and y being used as
functions for each other.
X^2= ± √1- (Y – 2)^2
Or
X^2+ 1 – (Y-2)^2
And
Y = 2 ±√ 1 – X^2
Or
(Y-2)^2 + 1 – X^2

If these are possible, then what will be the domains for these two functions?
The domain is -1, 1
What are the graphs of these two functions?
(Graphs found online with unknown author. I am currently using a handheld graphing calculator and need to figure out the online
version)

Are there points of the coordinate axes that relate to (0, 2) by means of R?
The points are (0,1) and (0,3) on the y axis that relate to (0,2) being the circumference of the center with an R of 1.

Instructions for submission

For this written assignment, answer the following questions showing all of your work.
1. Find the domain of the function using interval notation.

2. Sketch a graph of a piecewise function. Write the domain in interval notation.

[Suggestion: for example, go to www.desmos.com/calculator and write

for {-1 \leq x \leq 1}

and
y = 3x - 2 {1 \leq x \leq 3}
Then choose your own functions and have fun.]
3.
The cost in dollars of making x items is given by the function C(x) = 10x + 500.
a. The fixed cost is determined when zero items are produced. Find the fixed cost for this item.
b. What is the cost of making 25 items?
c. Suppose the maximum cost allowed is $1500. What are the domain and range of the cost function, C(x

Ans.1)

f ( x )= √
x−6
√ x−4
For finding the domain of the function f ( x )
The expression which is under the square root must be greater than∧equal¿ 0
x−6 ≥ 0 ⇒ x ≥6
The denominator must be greater than0
x−4>0 ⇒ x > 4
Therefore Domain of the function f ( x )will be,
𝐷𝑜𝑚(𝑓)= {𝑥 : 𝑥 ≥6} (here  indicates the set of the real numbers)
By applying interval notation, 𝐷𝑜𝑚(𝑓)= [6, )

Ans.2) The graph of piecewise function

(1) y=x 2 , domain of y is [ −1 ,1 ]
x y=x
2

-1 (−1 )2 1

0 ( 0 )2 0

2
1 (1) 1

*Image of this graph obtained in www.desmos.com/calculator.

(2) y=3 x−2 , domain of y is[1, 3]

x y=3 x−2
1 3 ( 1 )−2 1

2 3 ( 2 )−2 4
3 3 ( 3 )−2 7

*Image of this graph obtained in www.desmos.com/calculator.

3. C( x )=10 x +500
a) In place of x we put 0,
C( 0 )=10 ( 0 ) +500=500
b) In place of x we put 25,
C ( 25 )=10 ( 25 ) +500=250+500=750
c ¿ For finding the domain of the given finction ,
C ( x )=1500
⇒ 10 x +500=1500
10 x=1000
⇒ x=100
Domain of the functionC ( x )
Let C ( x ) =x=100
Domain of the cost function C ( x ) is[0,100]
Range of the function C( x )
Let C ( x ) = y=500
Range of the cost function C ( x ) is [500 , 1500]

The Concept of the Function

Let X and Y be two non-empty set and f is a relation which associates each element of set X with unique
element of set Y, then f is called function from X → Y
f: X → Y. (f is the function of X into Y)
Set X is called the domain of the function f and Y is called the co-domain of the function f.
Elements of the set Y are the images of elements of the set X called the range of the function f.

The Basic Concept of Function

y = f(x)

x is the input of a function, where we can put any defined values for which we get output for the function f.
For example:
let X = {a, b, c, d}, Y= {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
f(a) = 3, f(b) = 1, f(c) = 4, f(d) = 2
X→ Domain of f = {a, b, c, d}
Y → Co − domain of f = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
Range of f = {1, 2, 3, 4}
The range is subset of the co-domain
f:X → Y
What concepts (only the names) did you need to accommodate the concept of function in your mind?
It basically works on the mechanism of input and output.
For example :
let's assume y = f(x) is a function.
f(x) = x + 5x + 6
2

For each value of x, there is value for the function f(x).

input(domain of f(x)): All real number from (− ∞, ∞)
output(range of f(x)): All real number

What is the simplest function you can imagine?

y = f(x) = x domain of the function: (− ∞, ∞), range of the function: (− ∞, ∞)
In your day to day, is there any occurring fact that can be interpreted as a function?
Yes, many occurring facts can be interpreted as a function in our day-to-day life.
For example:
How do machines work? How do programming languages work? How does the computer
work?

 They all work on the same concept that is function.

 Machines need mechanisms or mechanical equipment such as gears, belts, etc. to run.
 Programming languages are the best examples of a function in day to day: they need an interpreter(it
is a kind of machine) to run the programs.

For example:
We write some program(input)in the interpreter after executing the program; they give us something that is
output.
Computers need software and hardware to work such as compiler, integrated chip, etc.

Is it possible to view a function?

Yes, it is possible for example flour grinding machines. We put in raw materials such as grains, wheat, etc
after going through the process, machines give us flour of various types.

What strategy are you using to get the graph of a function?

There are the following strategies that I use to get the graph of a function:
y = f(x) = x 3

1. I make the table to get the value of the function by putting input in the function.

This method is very easy to get a graph by putting values into coordinate axes for complex functions.
For a graph of a function:
The straight line drawn parallel to the y-axis in its domain should cut at only one point.
