Answer all questions in this paper. Please show all the step of calculation.

Question 1

A 50 mm-diameter siphon is drawing oil (s.g. = 0.82) from an oil reservoir as shown in Figure 1.
If the head loss from point 1 to point 2 is 1.50 m and from point 2 to point 3 is 2.40 m, find the
discharge of oil from the siphon and the oil pressure at point 2.
(Answer: Q = 0.00912 m3/s, P2 = -36.9 kN/m2)

Question 2

Referring to Figure 2 assume that liquid flows from A to C at the rate of 222L/s and that the
friction loss between A and B is negligible but that between B and C it is 0.1V2B/2g. Find the
pressure heads at A and C. (Answer: PA/γ = 20.0 m, PC/γ = 18.1 m)

Question 3

Water flows from a large tank through an orifice and discharges to the atmosphere, as shown in
Figure 2. The coefficients of velocity and contraction are 0.96 and 0.62, respectively. Find the
diameter and actual velocity in the jet and the discharge from the orifice. (g = 32.2 ft/s2)

Figure 3
(Answer: Djet = 0.1313 ft, Q = 0.329 ft3/s, v = 24.3ft/s)
Question 4

In Figure 4, the losses up to section A are 5v12/2g and the nozzle losses are 0.05v22/2g.
Determine the discharge and pressure at A, if H = 8m.
(Answer: Q = 0.0233 m3/s, PA = 73.1 kN/m2)

Question 5

The actual velocity in the contracted section of a jet of liquid flowing from a 2-in- diameter
orifice is 28.0 ft/s under a head of 15 ft. (g = 32.2 ft/s2)

a) What is the value of the coefficient of velocity?

b) If the measured discharged is 0.402 cfs, determine the coefficient of contraction and
discharge.
(Answer: a) Cv = 0.901, b) C = 0.594, Cc = 0.659)

Question 6

For the water channel flow down sloping ramp of Figure 4, h1 = 1 m, H = 3 m and v1 = 4 m/s.
The flow is uniform at 1 and 2. Neglecting losses find the downstream depth h 2 and show how
that three solutions are possible, of which only two are realistic. Neglect friction.
(Answer: h2 = 4.78 m [subcritical], h2= 0.432 m [supercritical], h2 = -0.396 m [impossible])
