CASCADING FILTERS

Cascading (or hierarchical) filters are ones where the selection on the first filter
causes the second to be limited to only those values that are now relevant.
This option is available for discrete filters in Tableau.

We need to make use of the "Only Relevant Values" option in the second filter.

Cascading is generally possible and practical for fields that can be made into a
Hierarchy e.g: State & City, Category & Sub-Category.

Step 1: Let us assume that we have the below mentioned bar chart visual

Step 2: Right-click City in Rows Shelf, Select Show Filter

Step 3: Observe that the City is placed on Filters Shelf and control is shown via Filters card

Step 4: Right-click State in Rows Shelf, Select Show Filter

Step 5: Observe that the State is placed on Filters Shelf and control is shown via Filters card

Step 6: By default, when we select any State e.g: Delaware we can see that the
view shows only cities in Delaware, but the City Filter card shows all cities.
Hence there is a mismatch

Step 7: Click on the bottom arrow at the top right side of City Filter control

Step 8: Select Only Relevant Values
CASCADING FILTERS
Step 9: Now the cities shown in City Filter card matches cities of Delaware in the view
CASCADING FILTERS
Step 10: The same will be applicable if we select a different State e.g: Arkansas
