REVESION OF APPLIED CHEMISTRY

QUESTION &ANSWER
1)Define A)Fuel B)chemical fuel c:nuclear fuel.
A.fuel is a substance that produces useful energy
either through combustion or through nuclear
reaction
B.Chemical Fuels: that produce heat energy by
combustion are termed as chemical fuels.
C.Nuclear fuel:is material used in nuclear power
stations to produce heat to power turbines.

2)State the classification of fuels with corresponding

examples of each one.
Fuels can be classified on the basis of their
A:occurrence
B:physical state

On the basis of occurrence, fuels are of two types

A)Primary Fuels or Natural

Example: wood, peat, coal, and natural gas.

B)Secondary Fuels or Derived Fuels

Example: coke, charcoal, and water gas.

On the basis of their physical state,

A.Solid fuels
B.Liquid fuels
C.Gaseous fuels
3)State the characteristics of a good fuel.
A:High Calorific Value
B:Ignition Temperature
C:Moisture Content
D:Non-combustible Matter
E:Velocity of Combustion
F:Combustion Products
G:Cost of the Fuel
H:Storage and Transportation
I:Size
J:Combustion Should Be Controllable

4)What is the difference between Gross and net

calorific value.
Gross Calorific Value is defined as the
total amount of heat produced when a unit quantity
(mass/volume) of fuel is burnt completely, and the
products combustion are cooled to room
temperature.
While Low Calorific Value:is defined as
the heat produced when a unit quantity
(mass/volume) of a fuel is burnt completely and the
hot combustion products are allowed to escape.

5)What are the two types of analysis that ascertains

the quality of coal.
types of analysis:
A-Proximate analysis B-Ultimate analysis
