7. Course Description The module aims to introduce students to the core

research concepts, processes, techniques, methods and
approaches in the specializations offered under Information
Science and Systems program (Information Science,
Information Systems, Library and Information Management,
Language Technologies and Health Informatics). It starts
with the what, the why and the how of research to give
students the basic understanding and familiarity with
scientific research in general. The major part of the module
takes students through the generic processes of research,
starting with research problem identification to final
reporting of research outputs. Under each phase of the
generic research processes covered, each specialization is
required to emphasize the issues that are relevant to research
in the respective specialization. The module also covers
different research approaches specifically quantitative,
qualitative and design science. Ethical issues in research is
also covered in this module.
8. Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this module students will be
able to:
 develop appreciation for scientific research in generation
of knowledge
 distinguish the different types, approaches,
paradigms, designs and methodologies in research
 understand the nature of research problems and the
research approaches required to address them
 apply the research concepts, process and
methodologies to design research in their respective
specialization
 select research designs appropriate to research issues in
their respective specialization
 develop research proposal apply the scientific report writing
techniques and norms to communicate their research proposals and
finding.
