Problem Set 1
PARTICLE SYSTEMS
1. Calculate the sphericity of the following:
a. Cylinder where its diameter is half its height.
b. Right circular cone with a diameter equal to its height
c. Prove that the sphericity of a sphere is 1.0.
2. A particle is shaped like a triangular prism where in the base is an equilateral triangle with the
side having length of 3mm and while the height of the prism is 4mm. Calculate the:
a. the volume diameter
b. the surface diameter
c. the surface-volume diameter
3. Estimate the density (in kg/m3 and lbm/ft3) of a particle in if its specific surface area is equal to 3
ft2/lbm, a specific surface ratio of 12; and a particle diameter of around 5 cm.
4. Water at 303 K is flowing at the rate of 10 gal/min in a pipe having an inside diameter (ID) of
2.067 in. Calculate the Reynolds number using both English units and SI units.
5. Assume frictionless flow in a long, horizontal, conical pipe. The diameter is 2.0 ft at one end and
4.0 ft at the other. The pressure head at the smaller end is 16 ft of water. If water flows through
this cone at a rate of 125.6 ft3/sec, find the pressure head at the larger end.
6. Discuss the following Particle Size Measurement Techniques in reference to its procedure:
a. Electronic Particle Counter
b. Laser Diffraction Analyzer
c. X-Ray or Photo-sedimentometer
d. Sub-micron particle sizing
7. Compare and contrast the following types of diameters of particle systems and discuss in what
way these diameters is used or applied. Discussion should be in the perspective of Particle
Technology or Particle Systems:
a. Feret’s Diameter
b. Martin’s Diameter
c. Shear Diameter
8. Discuss how the Pipette Method and the Sedimentation Balance Method works in the study of
sedimentation.
