Part A
1. Is 𝑇: 𝑅2 → 𝑅 defined by 𝑇 (𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑥𝑦 a linear transformation.
2. If 𝑇: 𝑅3 → 𝑅2 defined by 𝑇(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = (𝑥 − 𝑦, 2𝑧) is a linear transformation. Then find the nullity of 𝑇 ? 3. Let 𝑇: 𝑅2 → 𝑅3 be the linear transformation defined by 𝑇 (𝑥, 𝑦) = (𝑥 + 𝑦 , 𝑥 − 𝑦, 𝑦). Then find the Range space of T . 4. Let 𝑇: 𝑅 2 → 𝑅2 by 𝑇 (𝑎1 , 𝑎2 ) = (𝑎1 + 𝑎2 , 𝑎1 ). Find the dim N(T) ? Part B 1. Let 𝑇: 𝑅3 → 𝑅2 be defined by (𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = (2𝑥 − 𝑦, 3𝑧) . Verify whether 𝑇 is linear or not. 2. Consider the basis 𝑆 = {𝑣1 , 𝑣2 , 𝑣3 } for 𝑅 3 , where 𝑣1 = (1, 1, 1), 𝑣2 = (1, 1, 0) and 𝑣3 = (1, 0, 0). Let 𝑇: 𝑅3 → 𝑅 2 be the linear transformation such that 𝑇(𝑣1 ) = (1, 0), 𝑇(𝑣2 ) = (2, −1) and 𝑇(𝑣3 ) = (4, 3). Find the formula for (𝑥1 , 𝑥2 , 𝑥3 ) , then use this formula to compute 𝑇(2, −3, 5). 3. Prove that there exist a linear transformation 𝑇: 𝑅2 → 𝑅3 such that 𝑇(1, 1) = (1, 0, 2), 𝑇(2, 3) = (1, −1, 4). Also find (i) N(T) and R(T) (ii) Is T one – one and on-to? 4. Let 𝑇: 𝑅2 → 𝑅3 by 𝑇 (𝑎1 , 𝑎2 ) = (𝑎1 + 𝑎2 , 0, 2𝑎1 − 𝑎2 ). Find nullity of 𝑇 and rank of 𝑇. Is 𝑇one one? Is 𝑇 onto?
