2.2 Piecewise Linear Functions

Page 1 & Page 2

Key Words
Linear Function
Piecewise function

Example 1
A rental car company, Function’s Car Rentals, charges a flat fee of $50 plus an additional $0.25 per mile driven when
the number of miles is no more than 100. If the car is driven more than 100 miles, the price per mile is increased to
$0.75 per mile. The cost c of the rental car in terms of miles driven, m is represented by the function below.

How could you graph the piecewise function to determine how much you will pay based on how many miles driven?
How much will it cost if the car is driven 40 miles? What about 160 miles

What do you notice?

Non-strict inequalities ( , ) are represented by ____________

Strict inequalities ( , ) are represented by _________

Example 2

● The first function 𝑦 =− 𝑥 + 2 is graphed for __________. Notice there is an ________ _______ on the
endpoint _______ because this function is defined for values ___________________________
but ___________
● The second function 𝑦 = 𝑥 is graphed for __________. Notice there is a ____________ on the endpoint
______, because this function is defined for values _________________, including ____________

Example 3

● The function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 1 is graphed over ________________. This means that the endpoint located at
________ is _________
● The function 𝑓(𝑥) =− 𝑥 + 3 is graphed over ______________. This means that the endpoints at __________
and _______ are both ________
● The constant function 𝑓(𝑥) = 4 is graphed over ___________. This means that the endpoint at ____ is
____________

Question 1 Question 2
A police officer issues tickets that vary in cost based on how
fast the car is speeding. Graph the piecewise function
representing the cost of the ticket, y, in terms of the
number of miles per hour over the speed limit, x.

● The function 𝑓(𝑥) = − 𝑥 − 1 is graphed ● Recall that a __________ ________ function is

over _________. This means that the endpoint represented by a ____________ on a coordinate
located at _______ is ___________ plane
● The function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 4 is graphed over ● The function 𝑓(𝑥) = 50 is graphed over
all ___________ this means that endpoint _________. This means that the endpoint _______
located at ________ is ______________ is _____________
● The function 𝑓(𝑥) = 80 is graphed over
___________. This means that the endpoint located
at _______ is ________ and the endpoint at
_________ is __________
● The function 𝑓(𝑥) = 135 is graphed over
________. This means that the endpoint at
__________ is ___________.

Example 1
Nuts and More charges different prices for nuts based on how many pounds are purchased. Walnuts cost $3.75 per
pound if 0-24 pounds are purchased, $2.50 per pound if more than 24 but less than 50 pounds are purchased and $2
per pound if 50 or more pounds are purchased.
The pricing plan is shown in the following graph.

Write a piecewise function that represents the total cost y,

in dollars, of purchasing x pounds of walnuts

Linear equations are typically written in ________ form

or ______________. M represents the _______ and b
represents the _____________.

Consider the following steps for writing the equation of a line

1. Identify the _____________. Where does the line cross
the ________. For the graphed line the y-intercept is
at ________ so b = ________

2. Identify the ______. What is the _________ divided by

the _________ between __________? Or what is the
________ over ______ between _______. For the graphed
line the slope is _____. So m = _________
3. Write the equation of the line in ____________
Plug in ____ for _____ and _____ for ____ Thus the
equation of the graphed line is y = ___________

Question 1 Question 2
A home vacation rental company charges $150 a night Write a piecewise function for the given graph.
for the first 3 nights, $100 a night for stays lasting 4
through 6 nights, and $85 a night for stays lasting 7 or
more nights. The total cost,C, is a function of the
number of nights that a guest stays, n. Write a
piecewise function to represent the scenario.

Lesson 2: What else I need to know:

To write the equation for a piecewise function, determine the equation of each linear segment and the interval
for which it is applied.

To locate open and closed endpoints, identify the inequality symbol used for each interval. Graph the linear
functions using Desmos or Geogebra and identify the ordered pair where each stops. Remember, ≤ and ≥
indicate CLOSED circle, while < and > indicate OPEN circle.
