What is It

Informational text is a non-fiction category of text. The main purpose is to

educate the readers about the specific topic regarding the natural world and
human beings.

To achieve this purpose, authors use different key structure to serve as their
framework in writing the text. Thus, this will serve as their guide in organizing
the text to provide an easy way to analyze and understand by the readers.

On activity that you have done, the key structure of various types of
informational text is already given. Let us now study them.

What are the KEY STRUCTURE of informational text?

There are five key structure of informational text used by the authors such as:

1. Description – this key structure is used basically to give a specific or

detailed description of something, to make the reader have a clear
picture in mind. It uses signal words or phrases that indicate a text
following description, such as the following:

for example in particular for instance

to illustrate such as most important

another

Example: A text that describes the Filipino Values in particular to

hospitality.

Filipinos are known for their warm hospitality. A trait

displayed by every Filipinos, a heartfelt and generous friendly
gestures given to visitors. Filipinos accept guests with warm and
pleasing ways to make their guests feel comfortable. Examples,
Filipinos always find a way to prepare the great tasting meal that
her visitors want to eat. They even offer the best room if their
visitor will spend the night on their home.

7
2. Sequence/Process/Order – this key structure is used to show
chronological events or a list of sequential instructions. It uses signal
words or phrases that indicate a text following a sequence of
instructions/process, such as the following:

after before during

earlier eventually finally

following first from

how to in order last

meanwhile next now

until while on ( date)

Examples: A paragraph that list the steps on proper handwashing.

Proper handwashing is one way to kill germs, avoid

getting sick, and spreading germs. To do this, first, wet your
both hands and apply enough soap to cover all hand surfaces.
Second, rub your hand’s palm to palm, palm to palm with
fingers interlaced, and rotational rubbing with your thumbs.
Third, rinse your hands with water and, finally, dry thoroughly
with a single-use towel. Now, you have a clean and safe hands.

3. Cause and Effect - this key structure is used to present the connections
between particular event, idea, or concept and the events, ideas, or
concepts that follow. It uses signal words and phrases that indicate
cause/ effect text structure, such as:

accordingly because consequence

cause effect if

in order to lead(s) to as a result

for these reasons therefore thus

so may be due to

8
Example: A paragraph that tells how Coronavirus easily spreads and
resulted to pandemic.

Coronavirus disease 2019 also known as COVID -19 is

an illness caused by coronavirus. This disease easily spreads
because coronavirus is highly infectious and cannot be seen by
naked eyes. This resulted to, global pandemic or rapid increase
on infected population in most countries.

4. Compare and Contrast- this key structure is used to show the

comparison involving multiple things, regarding their similarities
and differences. It uses signal words and phrases that indicate
compare and contrast text structure, such as

alike also both

even in common just as

although but despite

however instead otherwise

different from the same as similar to

as well as like unlike

but compared to in contrast to

more less As opposed to

Example: A text about the similarities and differences of snail mail and
email.

Snail mail and email are both ways used for

communication. However, the speed of delivery of email is
instantly or in a few minutes, unlike in a snail mail that it takes
a day or more before the recipient receives it.

9
5. Problem and Solution – this key structure is used to describe the
problem, explains the solutions, and then discuss the effects of the
solution. It uses signal words and phrases that indicate problem
and solution text structure, such as:

fortunately unfortunately therefore

trouble problem issue

challenge answer solution

conclusion to solve concerns

Example: A text about the problem on waste disposal and possible

solution.

Waste disposal problem is one of the pressing issues of

the Philippine government. People were used of throwing trash
wherever they want to throw or leaving it somewhere else. In
addition, poor practice of waste segregation gave rise to this
problem. To solve this problem, people should be educated,
disciplined, and motivated on how to practice the proper waste
disposal.
