1. Definition of Intellectual property (IP)- Refers to creations of mind, such as inventions;

literary and artistic works, designs and symbols, names and images used in commerce.

2. Intellectual property protects two rights namely economic and moral. Describe each.

 Moral Rights- Moral rights are personal rights that connects the creator of a work to

their work. Moral rights are about being property named or created when your work is

used, and the way your work is treated and shown. Moral rights require that your name

always shown with your work. This is called right of attribution.

 Economic rights- The economic rights protect the author’s economic interests and allow

the author to earn a profit by direct or indirect exploitation of work.


Define Copyright- Copyright (or author’s right) is a legal term used to describe the rights

that creators have over their literary and artistic works. Works covered by copyright range

from books, music, paintings, sculpture, and films to computer programs, databases,

advertisements, maps and technical drawings.


Define Plagiarism- Plagiarism is using someone else’s idea or work as your own without

acknowledging their work. Plagiarism is often unintentional.

Describe three consequences of plagiarism.

 Destroyed professional reputation

 Legal repercussions

 Substantial fines
Explain two ways plagiarism can be avoided.

 Crediting the original author in an in-text citation and in your reference list.

 Paraphrasing or quoting from your sources (and adding your own ideas).
