Activity Design: Exploiting Highlights

Reference Book: The Boy Who Lost His Face, 1989, by Louis Sachar (Author)

Continuum

Aim: To enhance reading comprehension and to teach students to express their beliefs and
opinions.

Learners: Public secondary school students (ages 11–12, specifically 7th grade), 30 students (18
girls, 12 boys).
Materials: Projector, laptop, smartphones/tablets, AI tools

Roles: T (Teacher), Ss (Students).

1. Preparation:
o T asks Ss couple of questions about how they feel about the characters in the
book. Ss in groups of 5 discuss their feedback.

2. Activity:
o T then asks Ss to scan the QR code to access an AI tool, Mentimeter (T already
introduced this tool at the previous week’s class)
o Ss are asked to answer the questions by using their smartphones/tablets.
 (APPENDIX A)
o T and Ss observe the answers in real time and see who agrees/disagrees with
what.
o T asks Ss to explain why they agree/disagree with that specific question.

Here and There

Aim: To enhance reading comprehension and enrich Ss creative thinking skills.

Learners: Public secondary school students (ages 11–12, specifically 7th grade), 30 students (18
girls, 12 boys).
Materials: Projector

Roles: T (Teacher), Ss (Students).

HERE:

o The T asks the Ss to form groups of five and discuss their favorite characters from
the book.
o Next, the T prompts each group to select a favorite character from any book or
movie they enjoy.
o Each group chooses one character.
o The T then instructs the groups to compare and contrast their favorite character
from the studied book with the character from the other chosen medium.

o Following this, the T asks the Ss to write a short excerpt or summary where they
replace their favorite character from the chosen book or movie.
o Finally, the Ss share and discuss their new scenes with their classmates.

THERE:

o The T asks the Ss to form groups of five and discuss their favorite superheroes or
heroines from movies.
o Each group selects one superhero or heroine and explains why they chose that
particular character.
o The T then asks the Ss to choose one of these three characters from the book—
David, Scott, or Mo—and incorporate him/her into their chosen movie scene.
o The Ss are instructed to write a script for that movie scene, featuring their chosen
book character.
o Finally, the Ss share their scripts with their classmates and engage in a class
discussion.
