Objectives

1. Acquire practical knowledge and experience in utilizing Zener diodes as voltage regulators.
2. Learn the construction of series and shunt regulators using BJT transistors.
3. Develop an understanding of line and load regulation concepts.
4. Construct and evaluate voltage regulator circuits, examining each circuit's performance in terms
of line and load regulation.
5. Explore the usage of the 78xx regulator family.

A. Zener as voltage regulator

Line Regulation

1.1 Connect the circuit shown in Figure 1. Adjust the input voltage source (𝑉𝐼𝑁) at 12 V.

1.2 Connect a voltmeter in parallel with load.

1.3 Turn ON the voltage source and measure the output voltage (𝑉𝑂) across the load (𝑅𝐿). Record the
result in table 1 as the reference voltage.

1.4 Vary VIN according to the table and measure the variation in 𝑉𝑂.

1.5 Using equation 1, compute the change in output voltage (𝛥𝑉𝑂) for each scenario.

𝛥𝑉𝑂 = 𝑉𝑂 − 𝑉𝑂−𝑅𝑒𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 (1)

1.6 Plot the relation between 𝑉𝐼𝑁 and 𝑉𝑂 on a gridded paper.

• CONCLUSION
After this experiment, we find that the series regulation is much better than
the shunt regulation because it is more stable when the load and the voltage
source was changed, also we find the transistor is work to balance the
decrease or increase in the current.
