Applied statistics in Environment – Review for final exam.

1. Theory (Multiple choices)
Chapter 5: Hypothesis tests
Chapter 6: t-test
Chapter 7: ANOVA
Chapter 8: Time series analysis and regression model

2. Calculation (Writing)
For each of the question: clearly state the steps, provide the equations, apply the value
and calculate the results.

1. Two random samples are selected, each of them has the size of 100 cases. In which,
sample A has 19 failure cases; sample B has 27 failure cases.
a) Apply the hypothesis test to determine if the two samples have the same fraction
of failure, using a probability of type I error equal to 0.05
b) Find the P-value for this test
c) Make conclusion on the hypothesis

2. Assume we have a 6-regressor model for a sample of 14 observations. Suppose that

SST is 0.5 and R-square is 0.94.
a) Find the value for SSE and SSR
b) Use the results in a) to test for significance of regression with alpha is 0.05
c) Make conclusion on the hypothesis

3. Dissolved oxygen (DO) in a lake was measured using 3 methods with the results
provided in the below table. Use one-way ANOVA to determine if there is sufficient
evidence that at least one method provides significantly different mean concentrations
from at least one other method.
Guidance: Do the following steps:
• Set up the hypotheses
• Compute the sum of squares between treatments (SST), mean square between
treatments (MSTR)
• Compute the sum of squares due to error (SSE), mean square due to error (MSE)
• Set up the ANOVA table for this problem
• At the α = 0.05 level of significance, test whether the means for the three
treatments are equal.
