SOFTWARE: - Collection of Programs are Software.

The Software is thosecomponents which make the task


of a user complete, as it is that componentwhich helps a
user to give set of instructions.

The Software is categorizedon the basis of functions


they are
1. System Software
2. Application Software
3. Programming Software

1. System Software: -Which controls all processing


activities andmakes sure that the resources and the
power of the computer areused in most efficient manner.
The System software cancategorized in to

1. Operating System
2. Language Processors (Assemblers,
Compilers,Interpreters)
3. Device Drivers
4. Utility Programs etc.

The System software as a package which consists of


variousprograms required for the functioning of the
computer itself. It is also neededfor translation, loading,
controlling and running of the program.

The system software basically serves following


purposes.

a. It controls the execution of programs on the computer.


b. It helps the development of software.
c. helps in storing and retrieving files.
d. performs a variety of system utility function.

1. Operating System: - Which is set of programs that


controls andsupport hardware and provide various
services which are used forbetter performance of
computer. The major functions of O.S are

1. It assigns processors to tasks


2. It manages memory and other storage areas
3. It acts as a command interpreter
4. File management
5. Input-Output Management
6. Establishing data security & Integrity
7. Maintains account of processor time for billing
purposes.
8. Provides data and time services etc.

The Operating systems can be classified as Single user


and Multiuser(number of users working on it at a given
point of time) andMultitasking operating systems,
Single user Operating systems - MSDOS
Multi-user Operating System - UNIX, Linux etc
Multitasking Operating System – Windows

Firmware.
Also called silicon chip that contains programmed
instructions that can easily be modified.
Utility software.
It is a special program that performs routine services
that make certain aspect of computing go on smoothly.
Such services include; sorting, copying, etc.
Types of utility software.
a). System utility
They help user to work with the os and its function.
b). Application utility.
They make application programs run more smoothly and
efficiently.
Networking software
They are user to facilitate communication between two
or more computers by connecting them using a
communication channel like cables to create a computer
network

II. APPLICATION SOFTWARE:


This is that software which serves specific purposes and
allows the
user to create applications which are for a given purpose
like financial
accounting, payroll examinations, human resources
management
etc.This software can be further classified, depending
upon the sourceof development as well the users:

i) Word processing software


ii) Electronic spreadsheets
iii) Database management software
iv) Graph generator
v) Report generator
vi) Communication software
classification according to acquisition.

a). In-house developed software/bespoke/tailor


made.
It is a program used to for a specific use in an
organization. They may not be available in the shop
because once developed for one company or user
may not address another.

b). vender off –the shelf software.


They are developed by software manufacturers and
distributed for sale.

Advantages of using vender of the shelf over


bespoke software.
 They can be installed and run.
 They are cheaper.
 They are readily available for almost all task.
 Minor errors since they are tested .its
DISADVAGES.
 They may have features not needed by user.
 May lack features required user.

 Proprietary software
They are commercial software whose cord is
Hidden to the user therefore modification
can made only be done by manufactures,
examples Microsoft windows and Microsoft
office.
 Open source software.
Its cord is software whose program cord is
made available to the user.
 Freeware.
This is a software whose license for free of
charge acquisition, distribute and making
copies,
 Shareware.
Are software licensed to freely make and
distribute copies.
