Bivariate Data- Laetoli Prints

This is NOT a usual assignment! So please write the assignment using a word document and saved
as a pdf. So copy and paste graphs into word.

1. Using the data set ‘2u database 2023’ and using either spreadsheet, Autograph or
software you prefer, draw a scatter graph of the bivariate data. You choose which
variable goes on which axis and make sure to choose an appropriate scale and
window, label the axes and put a title. Your scatter graph should not have a line of
best fit or any R2 value on it!

2. (a) Calculate the correlation coefficient, r, for all the data values.

(b) Identify and remove the outlier and calculate the correlation coefficient of the
dataset without the outlier, comment on the difference. Should the outlier remain in
the data set or not?

3. Calculate either the y-on-x or the x-on-y least squares regression line for the data.
Define clearly what x and y represent and give the value of a and b to a sensible
degree of accuracy. Bear in mind that you are predicting the height of the 2 hominids
from the foot lengths. Using Autograph or a spreadsheet, draw the line onto the scatter
graph and label the line with its equation.

5. Using the images/researching about the two sets of footprints, calculate what you
believe is a good estimate for the height of the two hominids. Show your working.
Comment on the reliability of your estimate.
