Unit 1 HW #3

1. Let f be the function in the graph. f has an inflection

point at x = 1 and stationary points at x = -4 and x = 6.
Answer each question that follows. Justify your answers.

a) For which values of x, if any, is f positive?

b) For which values of x, if any, is f ‘(x) positive?

c) For which values of x, if any, is f “(x) negative?

d) For which values of x, if any, is f “(x) zero?

2. Use the graph of g” shown to answer questions about g and g’. Justify all answers.

a) Where, if anywhere, is g concave up?

b) Where, if anywhere, is g’ decreasing?

c) How many stationary points does g ‘ have? Where are they located?

d) Does g have any inflection points? Where are they located?

3 Suppose f “(-1) = 2. What, if anything, does this imply about f and f ‘? Justify.

4. Suppose g”(1) = 0. What, if anything, does this imply about g? and g’ ?

5. Suppose the function h has an inflection point at x = 2. What, if anything, does this imply
about h’ and h” ?

6. Suppose that f(-3) = -1, f ‘(-3) = 0, and f “(-3) = 2. Is x = -3 a local min on f? Justify.

7. Sketch the graph of a function f(x) with the given set of conditions. Scale the graph appropriately.
a) f(x) > 0, f ‘(x) > 0, and f “(x) > 0 for all x b) f(x) < 0, f ‘(x) > 0, and f “(x) < 0 for all x.

8. Is there a function f for which f(x) > 0, f ‘(x) < 0, and f “(x) < 0 for all x? If so, sketch the graph of such
a function. If not, explain why no function can have all of these properties.
9. Suppose f ‘(x) = (x – 1)(x + 2)2. Make a sketch of the graph of f ‘(x)
without a calculator. Then, answer the questions that follow. Justify all answers.

a) Where is f increasing?

b) Is x = 1 is a local extreme point of f? If so, is x = 1 a local min/max or neither?

c) Is x = -2 a local extreme point of f? If so, is x = -2 a local min/max or neither?

d) Given f(2) =10, write the equation of the line tangent to f at x = 2.

10. Suppose f “(x) = 2x + 3. Make a sketch of the graph of f ”(x) without a calculator. Then, answer the
questions that follow. Justify all answers.

a) Where, if anywhere, is f concave up?

b) Where, if anywhere, is f ‘ decreasing?

c) Does f have any inflection points? Where are they located?

11. Assume that f, f ‘, and f “ are continuous functions on the interval [-3, 3] such that f(-3) = 4 and
f(3) = -1. Information about f ‘ and f “ are displayed in the table below. Justify all answers.

x [-3, -1) -1 (-1, 0) 0 (0, 1) 1 (1, 3]

f ‘(x) + 0 – – – 0 –
f “(x) – – – 0 + 0 –

a) Where is f concave up?

b) Where is f decreasing?

c) Where does f have a stationary point? Does each stationary point represent a local min/max or
neither?

d) Where does f achieve its maximum and minimum values on [-3, 3]?

12. In the left hand column below are graphs of several functions. In the right hand column are graphs of
the second derivatives of these functions. Match each function with its second derivative function.

a) I)

b) II)

c) III)

d) IV)
