Digital Thermometer (SGS)

The digital thermometer provides a cost-effective method for temperature


measurement, monitoring and control on liquid-immersed transformers. For
this case, two indicators are usually needed: one to measure the liquid
temperature and one to measure the winding temperature. The digital
thermometer is a “two-in-one” instrument where both temperatures are
displayed on the same face. Instead of a digital display, it uses the
traditional face that customers are accustomed to and facilitates readings in
bright conditions. The device is mounted directly in a thermowell and does
not require the use of thermal imaging.
The liquid temperature is measured through an RTD. Instead of the standard
thermal image used to simulate winding temperature, an external “Split
Core” type CT is included to measure the load current and thus calculate
the winding temperature. The mathematical model also calculates the
transformer life loss. Maximum temperatures are stored in a non-volatile
memory and displayed on the faceplate when required. The instrument
includes 5 6A / 250VAC relays, to activate the cooling systems and provide

alarm and breaker trip functions. These relays can be set to “safe mode” to
activate the transformer cooling system in case of power loss or device
damage. For communication it contains RS-485 serial port and fiber optic
outputs. It also has a USB port for configuration functions. Two
communication protocols are available on this instrument: DNP3.0 and
Modbus. When several thermometers are installed on different transformers
within a substation, they can be interconnected in a daisy chain
configuration, thus allowing simultaneous monitoring of several
transformers.
