Lab 1: How to Find Displacement using Phet Vectors
simulation?
Preface:
All of our movements can be mapped out using a series or sum of vectors, because we are
going in specific directions and over specified distances. What we want to learn with this experience is
if you start at one place and travel to another through a series of movements, where do you end up? How
far away are you from your original starting point? We begin with this question, “what is Displacement?
Well, Displacement is nothing more than a change in position and the Displacement Vector is the
distance between your starting point and stopping point. Is displacement a vector quantity or a scalar?
Displacement is a vector that is the shortest distance from the initial to the final position, so that’s why
we can use the vectors simulation to know the Displacement.
Objective
In this Experience, you'll learn how to add two displacement vectors. A displacement vector tells you
how the position of an object has changed. This displacement vector includes not only how far you have
traveled but also in which direction you have traveled.
Worksheet Directions:
In this activity, you're going to be using the Phet simulation to find the displacement. To get
started, follow the steps below, then answer the analysis questions.
1. Open the simulation and choose “Explore 2D” from the link below to be able to find the
answer :
https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/vector-addition/latest/vector-addition_en.html
2. Find the Displacement using Both the Vectors Simulation and the Analytical method.
3. Compare your answers and make sure your answers are correct.
B = ________________________
C = _________________________
Plot all that information in the Phet Simulation to get the resultant and take a picture of it:
Steps: 1. Drag the first vector a⃗ where the tail of the vector is at the origin. Be patient in setting up your
vector.
2. Drag the second vector b⃗ where the tail of the second vector is at the arrowhead of the first
vector.
3. Drag the third vector c⃗ where the tail of the third vector is at the arrowhead of the 2nd vector.
4. Click the box SUM to get the resultant/displacement and drag the vector Sum to the origin and
use the snipping tool to get the image.
Now, use the Analytical method to see if your answers are correct:
- MAGNITUDE DIRECTION x-component y-component
A
B
C
|S|
Question2 : Use the simulation and the Formulas to find the total displacement of a person who walks
the following three paths (displacements): on a flat field. First, he walks 8.90 m in a direction 63.4º north
of east. Then, he walks 16.6 m heading 25.0º north of east. Finally, he turns and walks 17.7 m in a
direction 16.4° south of east.
Given: A = _________________________
B = _________________________
C = _________________________
Plot all that information in the Phet Simulation to get the resultant and take a picture of it:
Now, use the Analytical method to see if your answers are correct:
- MAGNITUDE DIRECTION x-component y-component
A
B

ANALYSIS:
1. What is the difference between vector and scalar quantity? Give examples on both.
Conclusion:
