Class Notes: Basic Addition

What is Addition?
Addition is one of the four basic operations in mathematics. It involves combining two or more
numbers to find their total or sum.

Key Terms:

1. Addend: The numbers that are being added.

2. Sum: The result of adding two or more numbers.

Example:

● If we add 2 and 3, we write it as:

2+3=5

Here, 2 and 3 are the addends, and 5 is the sum.

Addition Symbols
● The plus sign (+) is used to show addition.
● The equals sign (=) is used to show the result.

Example:

4 + 6 = 10

This means 4 added to 6 equals 10.

Properties of Addition
1. Commutative Property:
○ The order of the numbers does not matter.
○ Example: 3 + 5 = 5 + 3 = 8
2. Associative Property:

○When adding three or more numbers, the way the numbers are grouped does not
matter.
○ Example: (2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4) = 9
3. Identity Property:

○ Adding 0 to a number does not change the number.

○ Example: 7 + 0 = 7

Steps to Perform Addition

1. Write the numbers one below the other, aligning the digits by place value (ones, tens,
hundreds, etc.).
2. Start adding from the rightmost digit (ones place).
3. If the sum of a column is 10 or more, carry over the extra value to the next column.

Example:

Add 47 and 56.

Step 1: Align the numbers:

47

● 56

Step 2: Add the ones place: 7 + 6 = 13 (write 3, carry over 1).

Step 3: Add the tens place: 4 + 5 = 9, plus the carried over 1 = 10 (write 0, carry over 1).

Step 4: Write the final sum:

47

● 56
103

So, 47 + 56 = 103.

Practice Problems
1. 8+5=?
2. 12 + 15 = ?
3. 27 + 34 = ?
4. 53 + 29 = ?

Bonus Challenge: Add 125 + 349.

Fun Fact
Did you know that addition is one of the first math skills humans learn? Even toddlers can
recognize simple sums like 1 + 1!

Real-Life Applications of Addition

1. Counting money.
2. Measuring ingredients in cooking.
3. Keeping track of time.
4. Solving everyday problems, like calculating total cost while shopping.

With practice, addition becomes easy and fun! Keep solving problems to improve your skills!
