UNIT 4
INTRODUCTION
In the fast-paced world that we live in, the need for flexibility has come from the
advancement in technology as these developments have created new and exciting
opportunities for both personal and professional development. With flexible forms of
learning, students can learn and take classes wherever and whenever they want to. This
added freedom is important, providing the ideal opportunity to learn at a time or place that
suits without the constraints of physical location. This also enables students to fit their
learning around family life or work commitments and schedules. Greater choice in how they
learn enables individuals to take personal responsibility for their own studies, and a more
flexible environment ensures students don’t feel overwhelmed and pressured when it
comes to learning. This ensures an integrated learning environment where the needs of all
kinds of different people and abilities can be catered for.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this module, pre- service teachers should be able to:
1. Explain what a flexible learning environment is and identify the various platforms used to
support flexible learning.
2. Understand how creative educators utilize online tools, resources, and educational
portals for online distance learning.
3. Reflect on the role of technology, assessing its relevance and suitability in educational
settings.
Flexible Learning
On the other hand, according to the Commission on Higher Education, it involves the
use of digital and non-digital technology and covers both face-to-face. or in-person learning,
Flexible Schedules:
• Ability to conduct classes from any location.
• Improved work-life balance due to flexible timing.
• Reduced commuting time and associated stress.
Self-Paced Learning:
• Students can learn at their own pace, revisiting materials as needed.
• Flexibility to balance academics with other responsibilities.
• Opportunity to develop self-discipline and time management skills.
Worldwide Accessibility:
• Elimination of geographical barriers to education.
Cost-Effective:
• Reduced costs for physical infrastructure and commuting.
• Availability of free or affordable online resources.
• Flexibility in choosing affordable course options.
and can meet their professors and classmates once a month. Consultations with professors
are done through the Internet, telephone, or cell phone. This makes studying through BSU–
OU accessible and affordable.
The flexible mode of learning uses a platform such as Moodle, Google Classroom,
Edmodo, Schoology, etc. These are free programs designed for educational purposes. It
has features that are patented after the instructional activities of a teacher in a physical
classroom. When you use this, you can hold a lesson, post questions for discussion, hold
an online chat discussion, give assessment activities, and provide references or links to the
other online materials. Features relevant to instruction and facilitating of learning.
A. Moodle
Moodle was created by Martin Dougiamas, founder, and CEO of Moodle. MOODLE
stands for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment which is an open
source software. It is a Learning Management System (LMS) that supports teaching and
learning. Moodle enables you to create a private learning space online full of engaging
activities and material. You will always have full control of all your data and the way your
staff, students, and clients are on-boarded into the system.
Dr. Martin Dougiamas is best known as the founder of the open-source Moodle LMS
(used by over 60% of all higher education in the world). He is now the CEO of the Moodle
project, which produces Moodle Apps, Moodle Cloud, Moodle Educator Certifications,
Moodle Workplace and more.
B. Google Classroom
This is a powerful, free online platform designed to streamline the process of
teaching and learning. It is part of Google Workspace for Education and offers a suite of
tools that help educators create, distribute, and manage assignments, communicate with
students, and foster collaboration.
3. Integration with Google Tools: Google Classroom seamlessly integrates with other
Google services such as Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail. This allows for
easy sharing of files and resources, enhancing the learning experience.
5. Parent and Guardian Involvement: Teachers can invite parents and guardians to
sign up for email summaries of their child's upcoming or missing work, keeping them
informed and involved in the student's education.
6. Mobile Accessibility: Google Classroom is accessible via web browsers and mobile
apps, making it easy for students and teachers to stay connected and manage their
work from anywhere.
7. AI and Analytics: Recent updates have introduced AI features that help automate
tasks, such as generating images in Slides or creating interactive assignments.
Classroom analytics provide insights into student engagement and performance,
helping teachers tailor their instruction
C. Edmodo
In 2008, Edmodo was created by Nic Borg, Jeff O’Hara, and Crystal Hutter. Martina
(2015) compared Edmodo and google classroom in her blog. Although she discussed
several commonalities, there are apparently differences but with technology, things evolve
in so short time. What is clear is that they were created as apps that can integrate well with
classroom activities.
reach out to one another and connect by sharing ideas, problems, and helpful tips.
Assessment Tools: Edmodo has more advanced assessment tools and plugins,
making it suitable for detailed tracking and grading. Google Classroom offers basic
assessment tools but integrates well with Google Docs for grading and feedback.
Cost: Google Classroom is free with optional paid plans, while Edmodo offers a
freemium model with premium plans starting at $2,500/month.
D. Schoology
It is a social networking service and virtual learning environment for K-12 school
academic content. Also known as a learning management system (LMS) or course
management system (CMS), the cloud-based platform provides the tools needed to
manage an online classroom.
Learning is not just about teachers and students. Schoology allows you to bring
everyone together-students, teachers, coaches, parents, and administrators- with one
communication and collaboration platform.
E. MOOC
A massive open online course (MOOC) is a model for delivering learning content
online to any person who wants to take a course, with no limit on attendance.
1. Synchronous learning
(LMS). The teacher, referred to as the online tutor, facilitates the discussion, ensuring ideas
are shared and explored in real time. This format encourages active engagement rather
than lengthy lectures, requiring the tutor to carefully plan and guide the discussion to
maintain its flow and productivity.
2. Asynchronous learning
This type allows students to engage with course materials, lectures, and
assignments at their own pace, without requiring real-time interaction. Communication is
often facilitated
In this format, questions or tasks are posted, and participants can respond at their
convenience, providing flexibility in participation. One key advantage is that it allows
individuals to take their time to thoughtfully consider and compose their responses.
Both synchronous and asynchronous transmission have their own advantages and
limitations. Asynchronous transmission is ideal for sending small amounts of data, whereas
synchronous transmission is better suited for transmitting large volumes of data. Therefore,
both methods play a crucial role in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of data
transmission.
3. Blended learning
This approach involves a mix of online and in-person learning activities. Part of the
lesson is delivered through digital platforms, where students often have control over
aspects like time, place, path, or pace, while the other part takes place in a physical
classroom setting with the teacher and students present.
This model not only enhances flexibility but also leverages the strengths of both digital and
in-person environments to improve the overall educational experience.
Model 2: Rotation
Model 3: Flex
This model relies on an online platform to deliver most of the course content.
Additional support is provided as needed, either through on-site assistance or an online
tutor who facilitates tutorials or small group sessions. These sessions can be conducted
synchronously or asynchronously. Course participants can complete their tasks at a time
that suits them if it falls within the course's duration.
Planning and managing blended learning are similar to managing traditional schools
that integrate technology into their courses. It requires a school-wide approach, with clear
guidelines for students on how to use technology effectively in a blended format. This
includes developing a resource guide and ensuring access to necessary tools and
platforms. Additionally, schools must provide professional development for teachers to
support the effective use of technology and ensure equity in access for all students.
What is Networking?
It is defined as a group of individuals who communicate and connects on a regular
basis. The action or process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop
professional or social contacts
Social Networking
A social network is a website or app that lets people connect with each other on a
common platform. Users can share information, express opinions, explore mutual interests,
search for jobs, promote their businesses, form relationships, and otherwise interact with
each other.

Social networking sites have transformed the way we connect, learn, and share
experiences. They offer amazing opportunities to stay in touch with friends, collaborate on
projects, and explore ideas from around the world. However, with these benefits come risks
like cyberbullying, identity theft, and the lasting effects of a digital footprint.
According to Rouse (2022), a social networking site is an online platform that allows
users to create a public profile and interact with other users. These sites usually allow a
new user to provide a list of people with whom they share a connection, and then allow the
people on the list to confirm or deny the connection. After connections are established, the
new user can search the networks of connections to make more connections.

Youtube
Pinterest
Tiktok
X (previously known as Twitter)
Instagram
Snapchat
Reddit
It is important to understand how to stay safe and take precautions when using
social networking sites. In schools, networking can be monitored and controlled, and
students can use special social networking platforms designed for educational purposes.
These platforms allow students to post, share, and discuss ideas from activities.

2. Log out every time you use public computers. This is to avoid having your account
accessed by someone who will use these shared devices after you and to prevent the
risks of being a victim of identity theft or having your privacy breached.
3. Regularly check the privacy settings of social networking websites so that only
direct friends or those particularly known can see the post. In this way, you can
make sure that the people seeing your posts are people that you personally know and
can trust.
4. Online posts are saved and may become a permanent part of our online
reputation. As you use the internet you leave a digital footprint which can be
traced back to you. Digital footprint, also known as electronic footprint or digital
shadow, is the trail of data you leave behind when you use the internet. This includes
the websites you visit, the emails you send, and any information you share online
(Kaspersky Lab, 2021).
5. Do not accept invites from contacts unless you know them personally or you are
sure of their identity. This helps protect your privacy and keeps your account secure
from strangers or fake profiles.
8. You should accept friends and connections when you are sure of the person's
identity. Personally meeting someone you only met online is discouraged; even
if the sincerity of having a personal meeting looks convincing, it will be better if
you are accompanied. This helps protect you from potential risks and dangers and
ensures that you are not in a vulnerable situation when meeting people you don’t know
well.
10. Bullying takes place even on social networking websites. Cyberbullying uses site
messages, updates, and other functions to harass, intimidate, humiliate, taunt, or pick
on the individual. Here are some of the actions that you can take if you are a victim of
cyberbullying:
a. ignore the behavior by not responding at all
b. block the person
c. click the report button of abuse
d. talk to a trustworthy adult about it
Why is it important?
Connecting with peers, collaborating, sharing information, and having an active life
on social networking sites have its rewards. However, when one is not taking precautionary
steps there is also imminent danger. It is more beneficial if you understand its potential
when used properly.
For us, pre-service teachers, it’s not only about safeguarding your own information
and well-being—it’s about setting a powerful example for our future students and creating a
safe, respectful online community. As you step into our role as educators, the lessons you
teach about responsible digital behavior will empower our students to navigate the digital
world with confidence and care.
Online Resources
Web pages and documents on the internet that offer valuable information are
commonly referred to as online resources. Although online resources are typically
educational and data-driven, any online support software can also be classified as a
resource.
A. Electronic Journal
Also known as e-journals, and electric serials, are scholarly journals or intellectual
magazines that can be accessed via electronic transmission.
B. E-Books
An electronic book is a text and image-based publication in digital form produced
and readable on computers, and other digital devices.
C. Online Database
A database is an organized collection of structured information, or data, typically
stored electronically in a computer system. A database is usually controlled by a database
management system (DBMS).
D. Website
A website is a collection of linked web pages (plus their associated resources) that
share a unique domain name.
Using resources online requires some knowledge of web research and students
must understand this concept and all it entails in order to effectively and efficiently extract
information from the Internet. This is a result of web technologies which have advanced in
numerous ways, one of which is to provide full-text search capabilities. Though print
journals provide search aids such as indexing, this does not match the capabilities of e-
journal databases that facilitate searching the text of articles using Boolean Logic (Ganesh,
2003). For students to make a good search for information on the Internet, they need to
understand the various online resources and how to carry out web research.
1. EdX: edx.org – is an online education stop and MOOC provider, contributing high-
quality programs from the world’s best colleges and universities to students throughout.
4. Big Think: bigthink.com – these specialists draft reports and release tutorials for the
disciples, following the content is more filtered by the commentary crew of the website,
giving real material to the students.
9. Howcast: howcast.com – it is one-stop solution websites for all the questions, none of
the above online educational portals have these diverse sectors.
Examples:
• Google Classroom
• Duolingo
• Kahoot
Examples:
• Educational Apps

• Flashcards
• Interactive Learning Games
Technology's benefit in the classroom is all in the way it's used. When paired with
interpersonal relationships, thoughtful educators, and deliberate programs, technology can
be an incredible asset. In the future, it's likely that we'll start seeing classrooms adopt a
one-to-one ratio between kids and devices. We'll soon experience custom learning via
smart sensory visual devices which will be the advent of the new era of learning.
