FLEXIBLE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

INTRODUCTION

In the fast-paced world that we live in, the need for flexibility has come from the
advancement in technology as these developments have created new and exciting
opportunities for both personal and professional development. With flexible forms of
learning, students can learn and take classes wherever and whenever they want to. This
added freedom is important, providing the ideal opportunity to learn at a time or place that
suits without the constraints of physical location. This also enables students to fit their
learning around family life or work commitments and schedules. Greater choice in how they
learn enables individuals to take personal responsibility for their own studies, and a more
flexible environment ensures students don’t feel overwhelmed and pressured when it
comes to learning. This ensures an integrated learning environment where the needs of all
kinds of different people and abilities can be catered for.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this module, pre- service teachers should be able to:

1. Explain what a flexible learning environment is and identify the various platforms used to
support flexible learning.
2. Understand how creative educators utilize online tools, resources, and educational
portals for online distance learning.
3. Reflect on the role of technology, assessing its relevance and suitability in educational
settings.

Flexible Learning

Flexible learning is an educational approach that prioritizes the needs, preferences,

and circumstances of individual learners. It is designed to accommodate students' diverse
lifestyles, schedules, and learning styles, ensuring that education is accessible and
adaptable for everyone. This method allows learners to choose when, where, and how they
engage with their studies, making it possible to balance education with work, family, and
other commitments.

Imagine Maria, a working mother who wants to pursue a degree in business

management. With flexible learning options, she can enroll in an online program that allows
her to study from home during her free time. Furthermore, she can take advantage of
blended learning opportunities, attending face-to-face workshops on weekends while
completing most coursework online. Choose independent study options, so she can learn
at her own pace, progressing faster through topics she finds easier and spending more time
on those she finds challenging.

On the other hand, according to the Commission on Higher Education, it involves the

E. MOOC
A massive open online course (MOOC) is a model for delivering learning content
online to any person who wants to take a course, with no limit on attendance.

 MOOC-Based Alternative Credentials; what is the value for the learner?

With learners today earning more substantive credentials and, in some cases,
academic credits through MOOCs, the authors designed a study to investigate the benefits
and costs to learners who are engaging in a series of open, online courses that provide a
culminating non-degree credential.

 Voice from Afar; Building the Academic Practitioner Bridge

Online applied graduate programs that target working professionals are rapidly
growing in number. One program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
incorporated strategies to enhance the learning experience by using authentic elements in
course and program design.

Whilst Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) undeniably represent a change of

scale, they are nevertheless part of the age‐old concept of distance learning. MOOCs are
defined by their audience and their format. These courses are open to one and all and have
no physical limitations because they are completely digitized and accessible over the
Internet with no barriers. The MOOCs are distinguished into two main types: "MOOC" or
"transmissive MOOC" which guides the students like a teacher along a clearly defined path;
and connectivist MOOC in which learners themselves construct their own course.

Types of Online Education

1. Synchronous learning

This is a learning method where students and instructors interact in real-time,

typically through virtual platforms like video conferencing, live chats, or webinars. It allows
for direct communication, immediate feedback, and collaboration among participants,
mimicking a traditional classroom environment.

In this setup, course participants join a virtual classroom at a pre-scheduled time to

discuss lesson topics. Regardless of their location, participants log in simultaneously to
engage in the live session, a feature supported by many Learning Management Systems

PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY 8

BYPROF ED 108: Technology for Teaching and Learning 1 Module No. 3

(LMS). The teacher, referred to as the online tutor, facilitates the discussion, ensuring ideas
are shared and explored in real time. This format encourages active engagement rather
than lengthy lectures, requiring the tutor to carefully plan and guide the discussion to
maintain its flow and productivity.

2. Asynchronous learning

This type allows students to engage with course materials, lectures, and
assignments at their own pace, without requiring real-time interaction. Communication is
often facilitated

through discussion boards, emails, or pre-recorded videos.

In this format, questions or tasks are posted, and participants can respond at their
convenience, providing flexibility in participation. One key advantage is that it allows
individuals to take their time to thoughtfully consider and compose their responses.

Synchronous learning is ideal for fostering interaction and engagement, as it allows

students and instructors to communicate in real time, which can enhance collaboration and
immediate feedback. However, it may lack flexibility, as students must adhere to a fixed
schedule. On the other hand, asynchronous learning provides greater flexibility and
autonomy, enabling students to learn at their own pace and on their own time. While this
model offers convenience, it requires more self-motivation and can feel less interactive due
to the absence of real-time communication.

Both synchronous and asynchronous transmission have their own advantages and
limitations. Asynchronous transmission is ideal for sending small amounts of data, whereas
synchronous transmission is better suited for transmitting large volumes of data. Therefore,
both methods play a crucial role in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of data
transmission.

3. Blended learning

This is an approach to education that combines online educational materials and

opportunities for interaction online with traditional place-based classroom methods. It is a
flexible learning model that combines various instructional delivery modalities to adapt to
different teaching and learning needs. Since the design of blended learning is highly
context-dependent, there is no universal definition, making its implementation vary widely
across educational settings.

This approach involves a mix of online and in-person learning activities. Part of the
lesson is delivered through digital platforms, where students often have control over
aspects like time, place, path, or pace, while the other part takes place in a physical
classroom setting with the teacher and students present.

Blended learning transcends the simple integration of technology in classrooms by

fundamentally reimagining the teaching and learning process. It combines e-learning,
traditional classroom instruction, and independent study to create a hybrid methodology
that encourages active participation, personalized learning, and collaborative experiences.

PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY 9

BYPROF ED 108: Technology for Teaching and Learning 1 Module No. 3

This model not only enhances flexibility but also leverages the strengths of both digital and
in-person environments to improve the overall educational experience.

Kinds of Blended Learning

Model 1: Face-to-Face Driver

In the face-to-face model, the teacher primarily delivers the curriculum in person
while occasionally incorporating online learning to enhance or offer an alternative
experience. Instruction may take place in a computer lab, or tasks might be assigned and
uploaded online.

Model 2: Rotation

In a course or subject, students rotate on a fixed schedule between learning online in

a one-to-one, self-paced learning environment and being inside the classroom with a face-
to-face teacher. This is the model that is in between traditional face-to-face learning and
online learning.

Model 3: Flex
This model relies on an online platform to deliver most of the course content.
Additional support is provided as needed, either through on-site assistance or an online
tutor who facilitates tutorials or small group sessions. These sessions can be conducted
synchronously or asynchronously. Course participants can complete their tasks at a time
that suits them if it falls within the course's duration.

Model 4: Online Lab

The online lab model uses an online platform to deliver the course but is located in a
physical classroom or computer laboratory. Online lab models of blended learning may be
enrolled in a traditional classroom course at the same time and therefore have blocked
schedules.

Model 5: Self blend

The Self-Blend Model is a system provided by the school where the students can
choose the courses they would like to have in addition to their typical brick-and-mortar
classroom classes. This model is always remote a major difference from the online lab.

Model 6: Online Driver

The online-driver model utilizes a platform and a teacher that delivers all curricula.
Students remotely work on their program most of the time. If ever there is a face-to-face
component, it is made optional, or if ever it is required for students to go to the physical
learning environment such as extracurricular activities augmenting the curriculum.

Planning and managing blended learning are similar to managing traditional schools
that integrate technology into their courses. It requires a school-wide approach, with clear
guidelines for students on how to use technology effectively in a blended format. This
includes developing a resource guide and ensuring access to necessary tools and
platforms. Additionally, schools must provide professional development for teachers to

PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY 10

BYPROF ED 108: Technology for Teaching and Learning 1 Module No. 3

support the effective use of technology and ensure equity in access for all students.

b. Topping these risks is also the danger of users getting hooked on the internet and
learning to ignore the real world.

Safeguarding Oneself When Using Social Networking Sites

Social networking sites have transformed the way we connect, learn, and share
experiences. They offer amazing opportunities to stay in touch with friends, collaborate on
projects, and explore ideas from around the world. However, with these benefits come risks

PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY 12

BYPROF ED 108: Technology for Teaching and Learning 1 Module No. 3

like cyberbullying, identity theft, and the lasting effects of a digital footprint.

What is a Social Networking Site?

According to Rouse (2022), a social networking site is an online platform that allows
users to create a public profile and interact with other users. These sites usually allow a
new user to provide a list of people with whom they share a connection, and then allow the
people on the list to confirm or deny the connection. After connections are established, the
new user can search the networks of connections to make more connections.

Examples of Social Networking Sites:

 Facebook
 Youtube

 Pinterest
 Tiktok
 X (previously known as Twitter)
 Instagram
 Snapchat
 Reddit

Social Networking Sites and Education

It is important to understand how to stay safe and take precautions when using
social networking sites. In schools, networking can be monitored and controlled, and
students can use special social networking platforms designed for educational purposes.
These platforms allow students to post, share, and discuss ideas from activities.

Examples of Social Networking Sites Used for Education:

 Google Classroom
 Kahoot!
 MS Teams
 Moodle
 Quizlet
 Schoology

Precautionary Measures When Using Social Networking Sites

1. A social networking account has passwords and login details. Secure

passwords and keep them private. The advised length of a strong password
consists of 12-16 characters containing capital letters, small letters, symbols, and
numerical combined. Having a more complex password can minimize the chance of
being hacked.

PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY 13

BYPROF ED 108: Technology for Teaching and Learning 1 Module No. 3

2. Log out every time you use public computers. This is to avoid having your account
accessed by someone who will use these shared devices after you and to prevent the
risks of being a victim of identity theft or having your privacy breached.

3. Regularly check the privacy settings of social networking websites so that only
direct friends or those particularly known can see the post. In this way, you can
make sure that the people seeing your posts are people that you personally know and
can trust.

4. Online posts are saved and may become a permanent part of our online
reputation. As you use the internet you leave a digital footprint which can be
traced back to you. Digital footprint, also known as electronic footprint or digital
shadow, is the trail of data you leave behind when you use the internet. This includes
the websites you visit, the emails you send, and any information you share online
(Kaspersky Lab, 2021).

5. Do not accept invites from contacts unless you know them personally or you are
sure of their identity. This helps protect your privacy and keeps your account secure
from strangers or fake profiles.

6. Seriously consider the effect of possible posts on others before deciding to do

so. If a post could be considered offensive or humiliating to another person,
then you should refrain from posting or uploading it. The Cybercrime Prevention
Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10175) is a law in the Philippines that addresses online
crimes such as hacking, identity theft, cyber libel, child pornography, cybersex,
phishing, and spamming, with provisions for penalties and cybersecurity measures.
According to Respicio (2024), cyber libel, under Section 4 of this law, refers to the act
of publishing defamatory statements against a person or entity through the use of
online platforms, such as social media, blogs, or websites.

7. Using appropriate language is essential. The tone when communicating or

sending social networking messages should be respectful. should be respectful.
This ensures clear and courteous communication, fosters a positive online
environment, and helps prevent misunderstandings, hurt feelings, or escalation of
conflicts.

8. You should accept friends and connections when you are sure of the person's
identity. Personally meeting someone you only met online is discouraged; even
if the sincerity of having a personal meeting looks convincing, it will be better if
you are accompanied. This helps protect you from potential risks and dangers and

PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY 14

BYPROF ED 108: Technology for Teaching and Learning 1 Module No. 3

ensures that you are not in a vulnerable situation when meeting people you don’t know
well.

9. When there is an indication of harassment or abuse, it is advised that you report

this by clicking the report button of accuse. It is better still to talk to friends or
trusted adults about the case. This helps ensure that the issue is addressed
properly and provides support from those who can guide you through the process.

10. Bullying takes place even on social networking websites. Cyberbullying uses site
messages, updates, and other functions to harass, intimidate, humiliate, taunt, or pick
on the individual. Here are some of the actions that you can take if you are a victim of
cyberbullying:
a. ignore the behavior by not responding at all
b. block the person
c. click the report button of abuse
d. talk to a trustworthy adult about it

Why is it important?

 protecting personal information

 preventing cyberbullying and harassment
 maintaining a positive digital footprint
 avoiding scams and online threats
 encourages responsible online behavior
 respecting others and building a safe community

Connecting with peers, collaborating, sharing information, and having an active life
on social networking sites have its rewards. However, when one is not taking precautionary
steps there is also imminent danger. It is more beneficial if you understand its potential
when used properly.

For us, pre-service teachers, it’s not only about safeguarding your own information
and well-being—it’s about setting a powerful example for our future students and creating a
safe, respectful online community. As you step into our role as educators, the lessons you
teach about responsible digital behavior will empower our students to navigate the digital
world with confidence and care.

Online Resources, Educational Sites and Portals

Online Resources

Web pages and documents on the internet that offer valuable information are
commonly referred to as online resources. Although online resources are typically

PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY 15

BYPROF ED 108: Technology for Teaching and Learning 1 Module No. 3

educational and data-driven, any online support software can also be classified as a
resource.

Types of Online Resources

A. Electronic Journal
Also known as e-journals, and electric serials, are scholarly journals or intellectual
magazines that can be accessed via electronic transmission.

B. E-Books
An electronic book is a text and image-based publication in digital form produced
and readable on computers, and other digital devices.

C. Online Database
A database is an organized collection of structured information, or data, typically
stored electronically in a computer system. A database is usually controlled by a database
management system (DBMS).

D. Website
A website is a collection of linked web pages (plus their associated resources) that
share a unique domain name.

Using resources online requires some knowledge of web research and students
must understand this concept and all it entails in order to effectively and efficiently extract
information from the Internet. This is a result of web technologies which have advanced in
numerous ways, one of which is to provide full-text search capabilities. Though print
journals provide search aids such as indexing, this does not match the capabilities of e-
journal databases that facilitate searching the text of articles using Boolean Logic (Ganesh,
2003). For students to make a good search for information on the Internet, they need to
understand the various online resources and how to carry out web research.
