A. Revision strategy
If you find difficulties memorizing history book content, you can consider the
following way I used.
1. Prepare a pile of single-lined paper and highlighter
2. Highlight the key points on your history book, and copy them onto the
single-lined paper with your own words and in point form
3. Read out what you write on the single lined paper.
4. Keep asking questions about the points you write throughout the
revision process (eg. Asking yourself to memorize all the things you
memorize in P.236 after revising P.237) to ensure your brain received
what you wrote and read
PS: You need to stay 200% concentrated during the revision process to
make this strategy work. Don’t hesitate to take a small break timely when
you feel you cannot concentrate.

B. DBQ skills
I. Before doing the question
1. Read the Caption of the DBQ first
2. Read the questions
- DO NOT READ THE SOURCE EXCEPT THEIR TITLE BEFORE
READING ALL QUESTIONS
- Highlight all keywords of the questions
Sources+OK, question words, 時地人info
Eg. Identify and explain(drop down question types I&E) two
reasons(what you need to answer) of the flourishing economic
development(what the answer should be about) of Hong Kong with
reference to Source A(which source you need to use).

PS:You must highlight the time frame/period. If your answer is outside

that time frame, your answer may not be graded.

3. Read the source (highlight key words)

Eg. Source A: an excerpt about the development of Hong Kong’s
manufacturing industry
As an entrepôt, Hong Kong had limited manufacturing development until the
Second World War, when the development of manufacturing industries was
discontinued due to the Japanese occupation. Manufacturing in the city revived
after the War. The 1950s saw the city's transition from an entrepôt to a
manufacturing-based economy. The city's manufacturing industry grew rapidly
over the next decade(mark:1960s). The industries were diversified in different
aspects in the 1970s. One of the most notable reasons of diversification was
the oil crisis.
yellow:important information related to the source
Green: timeline
Blue: important information directly related to question
Orange: other important information

PS: You must read the question before reading the source so that you
won't panic even if you don't understand the source. You can also 有目的
地 find key points when reading the source which can save your time.

II. Structure of answering DBQ

Topic sentence(x1), evidence+explanation(every point)
Topic sentence:
● Stance (Yes, No)
● 事件 (eg. The event shown is the establishment of PRC)
● 人物 (eg. The man shown is Mark Young)
● Reasons (eg. The reason was the flourishing economic development
of Hong Kong)
● Trend (increase/decrease)
● PS: One sentence is enough

Evidence:
● DIRECT COPY FROM SOURCE (this is a must or else teachers
may not award mark for your answer)
● According to Source A, B, Own Knowledge (please write because
it is very important to emphasize you extracted it from the correct
place)
● Cartoon source: describe what is drawn inside
○ If see caption: consider that as a piece of evidence first
Eg. Source A
According to source A, the caption stated that the propaganda encourage
Hong Kong people to learn Japanese. There was also a Chinese girl
holding a Japanese textbook. (Describe the cartoon)/There are words
encouraging Hong Kong people to learn Japanese.
● Data source: quote numbers and state rise/fall, compare if necessary
Eg. Source B

According to Source B, the total trade value decreased from 15000 million
Hong Kong dollars in 1950 to around 12500 million Hong Kong dollars in
1955. It then increased from 12500 million Hong Kong dollars to around
31000 million Hong Kong dollars in 1965.

Explanation:
1. Reflect what source said (for cartoon, data)

🇨🇳 🇯🇵
● 化抽象為現實
○ Eg. Source A girl holding book: it shows that Japanese
government thinks Chinese should also learn Japanese.
○ Eg. source B trend: it shows the more frequent trade activities
between Hong Kong and other countries.
2. Link to question
● Response to what question what you to answer
● Write something to support that your quote/evidence is related to the
question
○ Eg .question 3: The decrease in industrial production shows the
weakened manufacturing industry during Japanese occupation
and thus the economic situation is bad.
○ More examples: please refer to my DBQ exercises

Own knowledge:
● There are no special skills here but please memorize everything
and direct copy them onto the exam paper (no need paraphrase)
● Add one sentence to show linkage/relation to the question
○ Refer to above example and examples in my DBQ exercise

III. DBQ Question types

1. Identify and Explain
Identify:
● use a topic sentence (directly answer event, reason, person)
● Cite 1-2 clues (2 the best)
Explain:

○ Why: identify reason
○ How: identify reason, trend
○ Other question words:時地人

part)

3. Usefulness and limitations

● Question: Can Source X reflect XXXX?/ What is not reflected in
source XXX?
● Usually asking reasons
● What is reflected in source: directly answer reason mentioned in
the source
● Draw a table if ask what is not reflected in the source: eg. DBQ
exercise (1950-1965)
✅ (use tick to represent what ❌ (use cross to represent what

source)▶️use your own

reason is reflected in the source) reason is not reflected in the

knowledge (directly copy book)

frequent communication with the international trade center
world
reform and opening up international financial center (stock
market)
geographical location

● answer the reasons reflected (source) / reason not reflected (own

knowledge) (if more than 1 mark then require explanation)
● Eg 1. Source A reflected the UN embargo on China.(answer what
reason reflected) It leads to the decline of the entrepôt trade of Hong
Kong. (Explanation).
● Eg. 2 Source B did not reflect the unstable political environment of
Mainland China(reason) which brings many cheap labour to Hong
Kong(explanation).

4. Trend
● TS: answer increase/decrease (you may not award mark if these 2
words are not shown)
● Evidence:
○ Data: refer to source B above
○ 文字:

shows the change (eg. Increase, decrease)
■ Include NUMERICAL DATA
● Explain: refer to explanation part above

5. Do you agree

○ Refer to evidence part
● Explanation: refer to explanation part

○ Therefore, yes, I agree with XXX

D. Exam Strategy
1. Do all section B (MC) first (10 minutes at most)
● This allows you to have less worries when doing LQ and DBQ
2. Do the paper you are more confidence with (35 minutes at most)
● Should do faster than another paper
3. Do the remaining paper (use all remaining time)
