Topic: Uses Of CFD

➢ Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD):-

CFD is the simulation of fluids engineering
systems using modeling (mathematical physical problem formulation) and numerical
methods (discretization methods, solvers, numerical parameters, and grid generations etc).

➢ Stages Of CFD Analysis:-

There are three core stages of CFD analysis:

1. Pre-processing:-
Pre-processing is the first step in CFD simulation which can help to define
the parameters of the simulation in an accurate way, if done properly. In this step, you will
need to identify the domain of interest and divide it into several segments.

2. Solving:-
Every simulation process through a CFD program has to follow a defined set of
steps. After all, simulations are a set of steps that must be compiled with – as these set
guidelines help to avoid getting stuck or receiving error messages in subsequent stages.

3. Post-processing:-
After getting the results in the simulation stage, your next step is to
analyse those results. Use the available methods such as vector plots, contour plots, data
curves and streamlines to achieve this.

➢ Uses Of CFD:-
CFD is used in different sectors. Some of it’s uses are stated below:

1. CFD is used in aerospace industry. It is used to predict the drag, lift, noise, structural
and thermal loads, combustion, etc., performance in aircraft systems and subsystems.

2. In automotive industry, CFD tool is used and customized in five major areas: vehicle
aerodynamic effect, thermal management, cylinder combustion, engine lubrication
and exhaust system performance.

3. The use of CFD in biomedical engineering and medicine are wide ranging. They are
currently used to enhance diagnostic capabilities and progress toward patient specific
precision medicine.

4. In chemical processes, CFD is widely used not only in predicting fluid flow and
mixing patterns in chemical reactors, but also in the simulation and modeling of
various unit operations where complex flow and transport processes make process
outcomes hard to predict.

5. CFD allows engineers to visualize flow velocity, density, thermal impact and
chemical concentrations for any region where the flow occurs.

6. CFD also known as three dimensional (3D) hydraulic modeling, is a practical way to
predict and visualize how water flows in real world conditions – including in rivers,
stormwater structures and wastewater systems.

7. CFD makes it possible to calculate the behaviour of liquids and gases in motion and
how they affect objects such as hulls, platforms, lifeboats and other marine
installations.

8. CFD has the important role in petroleum engineering applications such as studying
optimization of bit performance, convective heat transfer between casings and annular
fluids, cement displacement, flow in porous media like mud filtrate invasion etc.

9. The CFD with standard k-e two-phase flow model can be used to calculate pressure
drop coefficients for the coal/air as well as the clean air flow. It is also used to obtain
the numerical solution to address the problem of water wall erosion of the furnace of a
thermal power plant.

10. CFD was first used in anger within sport in the early 1990s it has now evolved to
become a dominant, if not indispensable, sports equipment design technology that can
produce legal competitive advantage improvements and performance enhancement in
elite sport.
