Long Question

1. What do you mean by rectilinear propagation of light? Define

diffraction and differentiate between fresnal and fraunhofer
diffraction with illustrative diagram.

2. Derive an expression to find resultant of ’n’ number of waves

with same amplitude and frequencies as well as successive phase
difference of δ .

3. What do you mean by diffracting grating? Discuss the diffraction

pattern of diffraction at a single slit and find the angular width of
central maxima. Also show that the width of central maxima is
equal to twice of the width of secondary maxima.

Numericals

1. In Fraunhofer diffraction due to a narrow slit a screen is placed

2 m away from the lens to obtain the pattern. If the slit width is
0.2 mm and the first minima lie 5 mm on either side of the central
maximum, find the wavelength of light.
Answer: 5 × 10−7 m

2. A screen is placed 2 m away from a narrow slit which is

illuminated with light of 6000Å. If the first minimum lies 5 mm
on either side of the central maximum, calculate the slit width.
Answer: 2.4 × 10−4 m

normally on a plane grating having 1250 lines per cm and a
second order spectral line is observed to be deviated through 30°.
Calculate the wavelength of the spectral line.
Answer: 2 × 10−6 m

4. What is the highest order spectrum, which can be seen with

monochromatic light of wavelength 6000 Å by means of a
diffraction grating with 5000 lines per cm.

separation of the 5048Å and 5016Å lines of helium in the
second order spectrum.
Answer: Angle of separation = 0.2782°

6. In a plane transmission grating the angle of diffraction for the

second order principal maximum for the wavelength 5 × 10−5
cm is 30. Calculate the number of lines in one cm of the grating
surface.
