GROUP ASSIGNMENT 1

1. The free vibrations of a system are governed by the differential equation

2𝑥̈ + 40𝑥̇ + 1800𝑥 = 0, with initial conditions x (0) = 0.001 m and ẋ (0) = 3 m/s.
Calculate or specify the following.
a) The natural frequency,
b) The damping ratio,
c) Whether the system is undamped, underdamped, critically damped, or overdamped
d) The undamped period,
e) The frequency in Hz,
f) The damped natural frequency (if appropriate),
g) The logarithmic decrement (if appropriate),
h) The amplitude,
i) The phase between the response and a pure sinusoid (if appropriate),
j) The free response of the system
2. A mass m is supported by two sets of springs oriented at 30° and 120° with respect to the X-
axis, as shown in Figure P2. A third pair of springs, each with a stiffness of k3, is to be
designed so as to make the system have a constant natural frequency while vibrating in any
direction x. Determine the necessary spring stiffness k3 and the orientation of the springs
with respect to the X-axis.

3. The system shown in Figure P3 has a natural frequency of 5 Hz for the following data: m =
10 kg, J0 = 5 kg-m2, r1 = 10 cm, r2 = 25 cm. When the system is disturbed by giving it an
initial displacement, the amplitude of free vibration is reduced by 80% in 10 cycles.
Determine the values of k and c.
4. The slender bar in the system of Figure P4 is rotated 5° from equilibrium and released.
Determine the time dependent response of the system if m = 2 kg, L = 80 cm, r = 10 cm, k =
20,000 N/m and c = 300 N-s/m.

5. Find the forced response of the viscously damped two-degree-of freedom system shown in
Figure. using modal analysis for the following data: m1 = 2 kg, m2 = 5 kg, k1 = 10 N/m, k2 =
20 N/m, k3 = 5 N/m, c1 = 2 N.s/m, c2 = 3 N.s/m, c3 = 1.0 N. s/m, f1(t) = 0, f2(t) = 5 N, and t ≥
0. Assume the initial conditions to be zero.

6. A car is modeled with a capability of pitch and bounce motions, as shown in Figure P6. It
travels on a rough road whose surface varies sinusoidally with an amplitude of 0.05 m and a
wavelength of 10 m. Derive the equations of motion of the car for the following data: mass
= 1000 kg, radius of gyration = 0.9 m, l1 = 1.0 m, l2 = 1.5 m, kf = 18 kN/m, kr = 22 kN/m,
velocity = 50 km/h.

GROUP ASSIGNMENT 2

1. Derive the equations of motion, using Newton’s second law of motion, for each of the
systems shown in Figs. P1(a) and P1(b)

Fig.: P1(a)

Fig.: P1(a)
2. Use the free-body diagram method to derive the differential equations governing the motion
of the systems shown in Figures P2 using the indicated generalized coordinates. Make
linearizing assumptions and write the resulting equations in matrix form

3. Find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the following matrix:
8 −1
[𝐴] = [ ]
−4 4
Hint: The eigenvalue problem associated with the matrix [A] is defined as
[[𝐴] − 𝑙[𝐼]]𝑋⃗ = 0

where λ is the eigenvalue and 𝑋⃗ is the eigenvector.

4. Find the steady-state response of the system shown in Figure P4 when the masses are
subjected to the simple harmonic forces F1 = F2 = F3 = F0 cos (ωt), where ω = 1.752
√𝑘/𝑚. Assume that m1 = m2 = m3 = 20 kg, k1 = k2 = k3 = 1000 N/mm, c4 = c5 = 0100 N/m,
and the damping ratio in each normal mode is given by ζi = 0.01, i = 1, 2, 3.
5. Consider the two degree of freedom system shown in Figure P4. This is the same model we
used in Figure P4,
a) Drive the equations of motion.
b) Find the time-domain responses, x1(t) and x2(t)

6. A spring-mass-damper system, having an undamped natural frequency of 100 Hz and a
damping constant of 20 N-s/m, is used as an accelerometer to measure the vibration of a
machine operating at a speed of 3000 rpm. If the actual acceleration is 10 m/s 2 and the
recorded acceleration is 9 m/s2, find the mass and the spring constant of the accelerometer.
7. A vibrometer has an undamped natural frequency of 10 Hz and a damped natural frequency
of 8 Hz. Find the lowest frequency in the range to infinity at which the amplitude can be
directly read from the vibrometer with less than 2% error.
