By Dr. Abdulbasit M.

1. A reciprocating pump, of mass 75 kg, is mounted at the middle of a steel plate of

thickness 13 mm, width 500 mm, and length 2.5 m, clamped along two edges as shown
in the Figure. During operation of the pump, the plate is subjected to a harmonic force,
F(t) = 250 cos 62.8t N. Find the amplitude of vibration of the plate.

2. Find the total response of a SDOF system with m =10kg, c = 20 N-s/m, k = 4000 N/m,
x0 = 0.01 m, 𝑥0̇ = 0 under the following conditions:
a. An external force 𝐹(𝑡) = 𝐹0 cos 𝜔𝑡 acts on the system with ω = 10 rad/s, and 𝐹0 =
100 𝑁
b. Free vibration with 𝐹(𝑡) = 0
3. In the following system, the springs has coefficient of 𝑘 = 10𝑁/𝑚 and mass of the
system is equal to 𝑚 = 5𝑘𝑔. A dynamic force, 𝑓(𝑡) = 10 𝑐𝑜𝑠5𝑡 is applying to this
system. For initial conditions x(0) = 0 & ẋ(0) = 0, find the equation of motion and plot
the response.

4. A system of mass 10 kg and stiffness 1.5 × 104 N/m is subject to Coulomb damping. If
the mass is driven harmonically by a 90-N force at 25 Hz, determine the equivalent
viscous damping coefficient if the coefficient of friction is 0.1.
5. Use the equivalent viscous damping coefficient calculated in Problem 4 and plot the
free response of the “equivalent” viscously damped system to the same initial
conditions.
