What is Energy Meter ?
An electricity meter, electric
meter, electrical meter, energy meter,
or kilowatt-hour meter is a device that
measures the amount of electric
energy consumed by a residence,
a business, or an electrically powered
device over a time interval.
What is a Smart Meter ?
Smart meter communicates real time, data
driven information, which allows
distribution companies to better understand
the grid management and consumption
pattern leading to improve grid
performance and quality of services to the
customers.
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a system that measures, collects,
and analyzes the energy usage, and communicates with the metering devices
such as electricity meters either on request or on a schedule.
These systems include hardware, software, communications, consumer energy
displays and controllers, customer associated systems, Meter Data
Management (MDM) software.
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
AMI acts as a fundamental technology for enabling smart grid. AMI enables the
following functionalities in smart grid:
Two-way communication between the utility grid and consumers.
Blink and voltage monitoring
Remote real-time meter reading
Provides information regarding usage patterns to utilities, thus enhancing the
demand response
The self-healing nature of AMI enables it to detect faults and reconfigure
them, thus ensuring a continuous power supply
Enables disconnection in case of tampering of meter, failure to pay electricity
bills on time, crossing the limit of sanctioned load.

Conclusion
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a relatively new concept which
needs improvement in the areas of communication, data analysis, control
system.
However, considering the global energy market scenario, the prospect of AMI
looks promising.
