Digestive System

Group of organs working together to

convert food into energy to feed the entire body.

Digestive System

Mechanical digestion - physically breaking food

into smaller pieces and pushing it through the digestive system.

Chemical digestion - chemically broken down using various

enzymes to release nutrients.

Digestive System

Enzyme - protein that speeds

up a chemical reaction.
Eg. saliva

Peristalsis

• The food particles pass through the long

esophagus by a series of smooth muscle
contractions called peristalsis.
• These contractions happen
throughout the digestive tract, moving
food and waste along.

Stomach
Stomach - smooth muscle organ that breaks down food with
enzymes and hydrochloric acids .

Chyme - partially broken down mass of food , semi-fluid .

Intestine
Small intestine - tube about 15 to 20
feet long.

Large intestine, or colon - wider than

the small intestine but about one-third
the length.

Liver - produces bile that breaks up large

fat particles in the small intestine.

Small Intestine - Villi

Nutrients are mainly absorbed in the

small intestine.

Absorption - occurs at capillaries in

places called villi, finger-like ridges
inside the small intestine.

Nervous System
Nervous System
• The brain and the spinal cord make up the central nervous system.
• Peripheral nervous system that connects to organ and muscle, reaching
the furthest extremities.
• Autonomic system controls involuntary actions, such as the
heartbeat, digestion, and breathing.
• Somatic system controls voluntary movements, such as lifting objects
and walking.
Neuron
Neurons make up the nervous system.
They have three main parts - a cell body, dendrites, and axons.

Cell
body
Neuron
Cell body - main portion of the cell, is covered with branches called dendrites
for receiving signals, and long axons that carry and transmit signals to another
neuron.

These signals or messages are called nerve impulses.

Synapse - a small gap that chemicals
called neurotransmitter to
stimulate the next neuron.

Synapse
Spinal cord

Spinal cord - main connection for

almost all of the nerves in the
body.
Nerves

Sensory nerves - carry messages to

the brain . Information from senses-
touch, taste, smell, hearing, and sight. Stimulus

Motor nerves - carry messages from

the brain to control body.
