Nets
Task: Create a Cube from a Net

Instructions:

1. Research & Plan (MYP Criterion A - Knowing and Understanding): Review the
properties of a cube and different possible nets. Choose one net that can form a cube.

2. Design & Draw (MYP Criterion B—Investigating Patterns): Draw your chosen net on a
paper sheet, ensuring measurement accuracy. You may use any paper dimensions, but
all squares should be equal.

3. Create & Construct (MYP Criterion C - Communicating): Cut out the net and fold it to
create a 3D cube.

4. Document (MYP Criterion D - Applying Mathematics in Real-life Contexts):

- Take pictures of each step: drawing, cutting, folding, and final cube.

- Arrange these images in a Word document, adding brief captions to explain each step.

NETS OF A CUBE

A cube is a 3-D solid object with six square faces and all the sides of a cube are of the
same length.

The net of a cube is formed when the 3D figure with the square faces is flattened by
separating at the edges making it into a 2D figure. Through the net of the cube, we can
see the six faces.

Properties of a cube - CueMath

A cube is considered a special kind of square prism since all the faces are in the shape of
a square and are platonic solid. There are many different properties of a cube just like
any other 3D or 2D shape. The properties are:

● A cube has 12 edges, 6 faces, and 8 vertices.

● All the faces of a cube are shaped as a square hence the length, breadth, and
height are the same.
● The angles between any two faces or surfaces are 90°.
● The opposite planes or faces in a cube are parallel to each other.
● The opposite edges in a cube are parallel to each other.
● Each of the faces in a cube meets the four other faces.
● Each of the vertices in a cube meets the three faces and three edges.

DESIGN AND DRAW

Chosen Net

THE PROCESS

1st step

Drawing the pattern: I had chosen an eye type of pattern/design to be made on the back
as I thought it would look interesting and unique. Drawing eyes is also something i draw
a lot and very often.

Final pattern
2nd step

Drawing the net: In this step, I drew a net using my ruler and pencil. Each face of the
final cube was 5cm by 5 cm.

3rd step

Cutting the net out: In this step I used scissors to cut out the outline of the net to create
the cube.

4th step

Folding the edges: To make it simpler to construct the cube, I have folded all of the net's
edges.
5th Step

Taping the net to form a cube: In this step, I started to create the cube using
double-sided tape as I could not find clear tape.

Cube after taping all the edges together

7th step

Stapling the edges together: Still after taping all the sides together, the cube wasn’t fully
complete. I stapled the edges that were not sealed to make sure the cube was a closed 3D
shape.
