KEY CONCEPTS  Basaltic magma has low silica content, low viscosity, and flows easily, resulting in
effusive eruptions with extensive lava flows.
 Andesitic magma has intermediate silica content and moderate viscosity, leading to
eruptions that are often explosive or a mix of explosive and effusive.
 Rhyolitic magma has high silica content and very high viscosity, which traps gases and
causes highly explosive eruptions, such as those that form calderas.

ATTENDANCE
ELICIT To start our discussion, let’s do a short activity for us to review what we discussed last
(Review previous lessons) meeting. We have here a set of jumbled letters for you to arrange to form the missing word.
(3 minutes)
After forming the correct word, I want you to briefly describe or define the word. Is that
clear, class?

If you want to answer, just raise your hand, and go in front once I call your name. Is that
clear, class?

Let’s start!

Here’s the first jumbled letters:

Answer: Volcano

Answer: Magma

Answer: Lava

Answer: Viscosity

Answer: Eruption

Very good, class! It seems that you really understood what we discussed last time.

ENGAGE Last discussion, we classified volcanoes based on activity. How do we classify volcanoes
(Establishing a purpose for the again based on activity?
lesson)
(2 minutes)
Very good! We classify volcanoes based on activity as active, inactive, and potentially
active.

How would differentiate the 3?

Okay, very good! We can classify them based on their history of eruption for the past
10,000 years.

We mentioned the word eruption. Does anyone have an idea about it?

A volcanic eruption is the process by which molten rock (magma) from inside the Earth's
crust is expelled to the surface.

Why do you think volcanoes erupt? What is the reason behind it?

Volcanoes erupt for two reasons:

1. The magma deep under the crust is less dense than the surrounding rock causing it to
rise.
2. As the magma approaches the surface of the Earth the gas that is in the magma will
come bubbling out because the pressure surrounding the magma will decrease nearer the
surface.

In today’s session, we are going to discuss about the molten rocks and minerals inside the
volcanoes, what do we call it, again?

Very good! We are going to discuss the different classification and composition of magma,
and how it relates to the explosiveness of eruption volcanoes.

EXPLORE Now, I want you to look at this table. What can you say about it? What is it about?
(Practicing new skills and
provide experience of the
phenomenon or concept)
(25 minutes)

Very good! It is about the classification and composition of magma. Based on the table,
what are the three classifications of magma?

Right! Now, I want you to read, and analyze the table. I’ll give you 3 minutes to do that,
then later on, I’ll be asking you questions. Is that clear, class?

Alright, your 3 minutes starts now!

IEXPLAIN Time’s up!

(Discussing new concepts and I’ll be asking you questions while we are discussing, so stay attentive, okay?
presenting examples)
(3 minutes)
First, let’s start by defining magma, what is magma, again?

Very good! How is it different from lava?

Right! Now, looking at the table, what is the characteristic of magma that is being
described on the second row?

Right! How would compare the three based viscosity?

Very good! Among the three, rhyolitic is the most viscous, and basaltic is the least viscous.

One factor, that can affect the viscosity of magma, is the temperature. Looking at the
viscosity and temperature of the three, what do you think is the relationship between
temperature and viscosity?

Very good! They opposite or inversely proportional. As the temperature increases, the
viscosity decreases.

Another factor that is affected by temperature is the gas content of magma, do you have
any idea why?

Right! It has something to do with the amount gases that are being released. Magma with

higher viscosity due to lower temperature releases fewer gases, what do you think is the
reason behind it?

Very good! More gases are trapped in the magma because it thicker which makes it harder
for the gases to flow.

What about the silica content of the three? What can you say about it in relation with the
other factors or characteristics?

Very good! Magma with higher silica content tends to be more viscous, and vice versa.

Among the three, which do you think has the most explosive eruption? Why do you think
so?

Very good! Among the three, rhyolitic magma is the most explosive.

ELABORATE Last time we discussed about the five types of volcanic eruptions, right? Can anyone recall
(Reconstructing explanations what are the five types?
and make connections related
concepts)
(3 minutes) Very good! Now, let’s relate it to what we have discussed today. What do you think is the
connection of the classification of magma to the type of volcanic eruption?

Right! Now, Let’s try to identify what classification of magma is responsible for each of the
five types of eruption.

1. Phreatic
2. Phreatomagmatic
3. Strombolian
4. Vulcanian
5. Plinian

Very good, class! Any question so far?

of Concepts and skills in daily
living)
(2 minutes)
EVALUATE To see if you really understood something in our discussion for today, let’s have an activity.
(Provide opportunity for pupils We have here words or phrases that describe a classification of magma. What you have to
to review and reflect on their
own learning and skill) do is to classify them if it is basaltic, andesitic, or rhyolitic. Is that clear, class?

accumulate)
