TUTORIAL-3 Transmission Lines

1. The following characterstics have been measured on a lossy transmission line at 100 MHz:

Zo = 50 + j0 (Ω)
α = 0.01 (dB/m)
β = 0.8π (rad/m)

Determine R, L, G, and C for the line.

2. The open-circuit and short-circuit impedances measured at the input terminals of a transmission line
4 (m) long are, respectively 250̸ −50◦ (Ω) and 360̸ 20◦ (Ω).

a) Determine Zo , α, and β of the line.

b) Determine R, L, G and C (assume ω = 0.705 × 108 rad/sec)

3. A 2 (m) lossless air-spaced transmission line having a characteristic impedance 50 (Ω) is terminated with
an impedance 40 + j30 (Ω) at an operating frequency of 200 (MHz). Find the input impedance.

4. Two half-wave dipole antennas, each with an impedance of 75 (Ω), are connected in parallel through a
pair of transmission lines, and the combination is connected to a feed transmission line, as shown in
Figure 1. All lines are 50 (Ω) and lossless.

Figure 1: Circuit for Problem 4

a) Calculate Zin1 , the input impedance of the antenna-terminated line, at the parallel junction.
b) Combine Zin1 and Zin2 in parallel to obtain ZL , the effective load impedance of the feedline.
c) Calculate Zin of the feedline.

5. In the circuit shown in Figure 2,

a) Calculate the load reflection cofficient, ZIN (λ/8) and the VSWR.

b) Evaluate V (λ/8) , I (λ/8) , P (λ/8) , V (0) , I (0) and P (0)

6. A generator with an open-circuit voltage vg (t) = 10 sin(8000πt) (V ) and internal impedance Zg =

40 + j30 (Ω) is connected to a 50 (Ω) distortionless line. The line has a resistance of 0.5 (Ω/m), and
its lossy dielectric medium has a loss tangent of 0.18%. The line is 50 (m) long and is terminated in a
matched load. Find

a) The instantaneous expressions for the voltage and current at an arbitrary location on the line.
b) The instantaneous expressions for the voltage and current at the load.
c) The average power transmitted to the load.

7. The SWR on a lossless 50 (Ω) transmission line terminated in an unknown load impedance is found to
be 3. The distance between successive voltage minima is 20 (cm) and the first minimum is located at
5 (cm) from the load. Determine

a) The reflection cofficient Γ

b) The load impedance ZL
c) The equivalent length (lm ) and the terminating resistance (Rm ) of a line such that the input
impedance is equal to ZL .

8. A distortionless line operating at 120 MHz has R = 20Ω/m , L = 0.3µH/m, and C = 63pF/m.

a) Determine γ, velocity v, and characteristic impedance Z0

b) How far will a voltage wave travel before it is reduced to 20% of its initial magnitude?
c) How far will it travel to suffer a 45◦ phase shift?

9. On a distortionless line, the voltage wave is given by

V (d) = 120e0.0025d cos(108 t + 2d) + 60e−0.0025d cos(108 t − 2d)

where d is the distance from the load. If ZL = 300Ω find:

a) α, β, and vp
b) Z0 and I(d)

10. A 75-Ω lossless line is terminated in a load impedance ZL = RL + jXL .

a) What must be the relation between RL and XL in order that the standing-wave ratio on the line
be 3?
b) Find XL , if RL = 150Ω.
c) Where does the voltage minimum and maximum nearest to the load occur on the line for part (b)?

11. A lossless coaxial cable of characteristic impedance 50Ω and having a nonmagnetic dielectric of permit-
tivity ϵ = 2.25ϵ0 is short-circuited at the far end. Find

a) the minimum length for which the input impedance is equal to the impedance of an inductor of
value equal to 0.5 µH at f = 100 MHz.
b) the minimum length if the cable is open circuited at the far end.

12. The following measurements are carried out on a 100Ω transmission line with an unknown load ZL .
The voltage standing wave ratio is 5, the distance between successive voltage minima is 25 cm, and the
distance from ZL to the first voltage minima is 8 cm. Determine the unknown load impedance.

13. A 50-Ω coaxial line filled with teflon (phase velocity = 21cm/ns) is connected to an antenna represented
by ZL . At f = 29.6 MHz, the feed-point impedance of the antenna is approximately measured to be
ZL = 75 + j25Ω. Find the two closest positions to the antenna along the line where the real part of the
line impedance is equal to the characteristic impedance of the line (i.e. Z0 )

14. The input impedance of a transmission line is 4500̸ tan−1 12 . In order to determine the unknown

impedance connected to the line, its load end is replaced successively by a short-circuit and open-
circuit. The impedance values obtained in these respective cases are 52̸ 90◦ and 48̸ − 90◦ respectively.
Determine the load impedance.

15. A lossless line has Z0 = 300Ω, ZS = 50Ω, and is 50 cm long at 150 MHz. If the line is open-circuited at
the load end, find the load voltage if a 10V sinusoidal source is connected at its input.
