What is Geography?

Geography is the study of the Earth and its features, the distribution of life across it, and the effects of
human activity on the planet. It's a broad and interdisciplinary field that explores the relationships

Two Major Branches:

 Physical Geography: This branch focuses on the natural features of the Earth, such as:

o Geomorphology: The study of landforms, including mountains, valleys, rivers, and


coasts.

o Climatology: The study of weather patterns, climate change, and atmospheric processes.

o Biogeography: The study of the distribution of plants and animals across the Earth.

o Hydrology: The study of water on Earth, including rivers, lakes, oceans, and
groundwater.

o Soil Science: The study of soil formation, composition, and properties.

 Human Geography: This branch examines the human aspects of the Earth, including:

o Population Geography: The study of population distribution, density, and migration


patterns.

o Cultural Geography: The study of how cultures vary across space and how they interact
with the environment.

o Economic Geography: The study of the distribution of economic activities, such as


agriculture, industry, and trade.

o Urban Geography: The study of cities and urban systems, including their growth,
development, and challenges.

o Political Geography: The study of the political organization of space, including

Key Concepts in Geography:

Importance of Geography:
