Contemporary

Philippine Arts
from the Regions
Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:

1. define contemporary and visual arts,

2. explain the elements and principles of visual arts; and

3. Create an artwork applying the elements and principles

of visual arts.
Contemporary Arts-
Refers to the art forms that made in
the late 1960s, continued and
enhanced by the artists of today with
the use of innovation and advance
technology to respond on the
culturally diverse global environment.
Visual Arts-
the term “visual arts” encompasses a wide range
of forms created by Filipinos. Traditionally, these
visual arts form include painting, drawing,
printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography,
video, filmmaking, design, crafts and architecture.
ELEMENTS OF VISUAL ARTS
1. Line- This refers to a prolongation of
a point, or a mark on a surface. Solid
lines can be used in order to define form
while broken lines are typically used to
suggest hidden forms. Lines are also
used to suggest dimensions, and to
guide visual movement.
2. Shape and Form- this element of art
refers to an area with boundaries identified
or drawn using lines. However, they differ
in terms of dimensions.
**Shape- is two dimensional, flat or
limited to height and width.
**Form- is three dimensional and encloses
volume; includes height, width and depth.
3. Color- refers to visual perception
that allows us to differentiate objects
due to the way various wavelength
of light are reflected. Color is one of
the very important element because
it can communicate information and
emotion to the viewer.
Properties of Color
Hue- refers to the basic or pure
color, and is represented in the
color wheel.
Value- refers to the lightness
and darkness of color. A light
color or tint is the result of adding
white to a hue, while a dark color
results from adding black to a
hue.
Saturation- refers to the brightness
and dullness of color. It is also
referred to as purity of the color. A
bright color can be produced by
adding more pigment to the same
hue, while a dull color can be
produced by adding gray or color’s
complement to the pigment.
Color Schemes
Color Schemes
Analogous
Complementary-
color scheme that
uses three
analogous colors
plus the
complement of the
middle color of the
analogous.
4. Value- this element refers to the lightness
or darkness of an area. This element is
evident in creating shadows for two-
dimensional object to give an illusion of depth.
5. Texture- element that refers to
the feel of appearance of a surface.
A person may describe texture if the
surface is either smoot or rough.
Texture may also be described as
actual or implied.
6. Space- refers to the area that is
occupied by an object as well as
the area surrounding that object or
subject. An illusion of space can
still be created in two-dimensional
perspective.
There are two types of space
perspective:

a. Atmospheric perspective,
which utilizes the properties of
light and air in depicting illusion
of distance.
b. Linear perspective which involves
the use of vanishing points and
receding hidden lines.
7. Time and Motion- is the movement in visual
arts that can either be an illusion or an actual
motion.
An illusion of movement is more common in
two-dimensional artworks.
Time and Motion
On the other hand,
actual motion is easily
seen in kinetic
sculpture, a type of
sculpture that moves
with the wind or are
vibrating with the
surrounding air.
Principles
of
Visual Arts
1. Balance-
refers to the
even and equal
distribution of
elements.
2. Emphasis- a principle which may refer to the
greater impact given to a certain element.
3. Harmony- is the unity of the artwork,
specifically about arrangement of the related
elements.
4. Movement- is the illusion of motion in a painting,
piece of art or in a sculpture design.
5. Proportion- refers to the relationship of
the size of elements in a body of art.
6. Rhythm- is the repetition of some elements
to produce a pattern.
7. Variety- this may be referred to as diversity. It
means adding multiple or different elements to break
the monotony of an artwork and make it more
interesting.
The elements and principles of arts mentioned
are essential for us in order to understand the
meaning of a piece of art clearly and deeply. The
diverse art forms in the Philippines from various
regions conveys its message by presenting the
elements and principle of visual arts for thorough
understanding.
