Enhancing Atal Tunnel Stability Using Innovative Methods
Enhancing Atal Tunnel Stability Using Innovative Methods
The Atal Tunnel, a monumental project in the Himalayan region, has encountered substantial
hurdles due to intricate geological conditions and severe environmental factors. A pivotal issue
that arose during its construction was the Seri Nala Fault Zone, spanning from Chainage 1+887
to Chainage 2+474. The zone's heavy water ingress of up to 140 liters/second and unexpected
rock types like Quartzitic Schist and Phyllitic Quartzite led to a delay in excavation by over 4
years. The resulting instability necessitated extensive remedial measures, including grouting,
fiber-reinforced shotcrete, and redefinition of tunnel convergence limits to 200 mm for Class 4
rock and 250 mm for Class 5 rock.
The challenges faced in the Seri Nala Fault Zone underscore the urgent need for innovative
methods to further fortify tunnel stability, reduce risk, and ensure long-term structural resilience.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
1. Identify innovative methods to improve tunnel stability, particularly in shear zones like the
Seri Nala Fault Zone, while addressing:
3. Suggest how SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems can be
utilized to improve real-time monitoring and maintenance, including:
