What is Narration?
Reporting the words of a speaker is called narration.

Two main ways of reporting the words of a speaker

direct speech or indirect speech(Reported Speech)
What is a direct speech?
The actual words of the speaker are quoted without any
change.
The exact words of the speaker are enclosed in inverted
commas or quotation marks “ “
Let us see some examples:
E.g. I am
studying
What are you
NITIN
doing Ali?

If NITIN has to report what actually ALI said

ALI
Direct speech: Ali said, “I am studying”

RV

said – Reporting verb

E.g. I am
wearing a
pink skirt. Which color
skirt are you
wearing? Naveen

If Naveen wants to report what exactly Tina said

Tina
Tina said, “I am wearing a pink skirt.”
Direct speech:
E.g.
Direct speech: Ali said, “ I am studying”

Indirect speech: Ali said that he was studying

What are the changes you can identify?

➢ Removal of “ “ quotes or inverted commas

➢ Change of tense (present tense became past tense)
➢ Use of conjunction ‘that’
Change of tense

This will happen when reporting verb is in past form and the reported speech is not a
universal truth or habit. It will happen in the following way
PRESENT TENSE
SIMPLE PRESENT will be converted into SIMPLE PAST
Eg. I drink coffee in the morning. (simple present)
I drank coffee in the morning. (simple past)

PRESENT CONTINOUS will be converted to PAST CONTINUOUS

Eg. Caran is getting ready for her online class. (present continuous)
Caran was getting ready for her online class. (past continuous)
Change in the words denoting time

Words indicating nearness are changed into words showing distances in indirect speech.
UPDATE TIME SPECIFIC WORDS

here there
tomorrow the next day
today that day
yesterday the previous day
this that
now then
