UNIT 1 ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HIV/AIDS

You are welcome to Unit 1. The unit focuses on basic facts about HIV and
AIDS. It is important that you have an in-depth knowledge about the
condition because it will help you to protect yourself, your family and
members of your community. Remember to share all the knowledge you
will acquire with your friends and your relations.

There are six sections in this unit, and each section will discuss a specific
area to help you grasp as much as you can about HIV and AIDS. In other
words, you will have the opportunity to learn about the basics of HIV and
AIDS and the fact that the virus keeps changing and has made it difficult for
scientists to find a vaccine or cure for it. You will also learn about the signs
and symptoms of HIV and AIDS. Again, you will learn about a social
history of HIV and AIDS IN Ghana as well as the social impact of HIV and
AIDS on individuals, communities and the nation. Since HIV and AIDS
affect us all, a section will also discuss some mobilization efforts to combat
the disease.

By the end of the Unit, you should be able to

 explain the difference between HIV and AIDS
 trace the history of HIV and AIDS,
 state the signs and symptoms of HIV and AIDS,
 explain the social impact of HIV and AIDS; and
 outline the key prevention, treatment and care-giving issues related to
the disease.
