ME 223 Solid Mechanics II (Dr.

Tarkes Dora Pallicity) Assignment III, WS 2024

Assignment – 4

Topic: Stress Tensor, Constitutive Relations

Submission Deadline: 26-03-2024, 18:00 hrs.

Instructions:

• Please submit only the scanned copy of the hand-written solution sheet in PDF format
through ME 223 MS Teams Portal.
• Please include your roll number & name on the sheets.
• Please name the PDF file only with your roll number.
• Late submissions (except on medical basis) or via e-mail submissions will not be entertained.

Problem 1 8 Points

1. Prove that the elastic stiffness tensor is a fourth order tensor? (Hint: Use rotation

tensor like it was proved for second order tensor in Assignment 3)

2. Considering the fact that the elastic energy stored in a body is a positive quantity,

show that 𝐸𝐸 > 0, 𝐺𝐺 > 0, −1 < 𝜐𝜐 < 0.5.

Problem 2 8 Points

A cuboid shaped block of aluminum material (see Fig. 1) with 𝐸𝐸 = 72 GPa, 𝜐𝜐 = 0.33

with having a square cross-section is subjected to biaxial loading conditions.

a) If 𝜎𝜎𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 = 200 MPa, determine the magnitude of 𝜎𝜎𝑦𝑦𝑦𝑦 , so that the dimension 𝑏𝑏 =

20 mm doesn’t change under the load.

b) Using the solution from (a) find the change in the dimension 𝑎𝑎.

c) Determine the change in the cross-sectional area of the block using the solution

from (a).

Problem 3 4 Points

On the free surface of a bearing made of a bronze material with 𝐸𝐸 = 110 GPa, 𝜐𝜐 =

0.35, the eigen values of the strain tensor are found to be 𝜀𝜀1 = 0.0015 and 𝜀𝜀2 = 0.0005.

The design criteria for the bearing is that the maximum tensile stress must not exceed

200 MPa. Check is the design criteria is satisfied.

Problem 4 5 Points

Find the eigen values of the stiffness tensor for an isotropic linear elastic material in

terms of any combination of elastic constants either (𝐸𝐸, 𝜈𝜈) or (𝐾𝐾, 𝐺𝐺) or (𝜆𝜆, 𝜇𝜇). Which

combination of elastic constants makes more meaningful to express the eigen values.

You may write a MATLAB/Python code using symbolic computation to find the eigen

values of this stiffness tensor (eigen values of 6×6 matrix from implementation

perspective). Include these codes in hand-written solution sheet (it should be less than

10 lines of code). For this problem, don’t derive any equations to find the eigen values.

Problem 5 8 Points

The traction vector at a point on a plane is 𝒕𝒕 = (3𝒆𝒆1 + 4𝒆𝒆2 + 12𝒆𝒆3 ) N/m2. The normal
stress on the plane is 5 N/m2.

a) Find out the directions of normal to the plane if the normal is perpendicular to

(i) 𝒆𝒆1 , (ii) 𝒆𝒆2 and (iii) 𝒆𝒆3 .

b) In general, how many planes are possible for a given traction vector and

magnitude of the direct stress?

Problem 6 5 Points

Three principal stresses at a point are 50 MPa, 100 MPa and 160 MPa. Sketch a 3D

Mohr circle based on this information. From the Mohr circle obtain the range of shear

stress amongst all planes in which the normal stress is 120 MPa.
