8. Explain in detail the role of 𝑎, ℎ, and 𝑘 in the equation 𝑦 = 𝑎 (𝑥 − ℎ)2

Opportunity

+ 𝑘. You may use words, numerical examples, and sketches to

support your explanation. (8 marks)

The role of 𝑎, ℎ, and 𝑘 in the equation 𝑦 = 𝑎 (𝑥 − ℎ)2 + k is 𝑎 determines the

steepness or width of the parabola with larger values resulting in a narrower parabola
and smaller values resulting in a wider parabola (H) represents the horizontal shift of

shifting it to the left (K) determines the vertical shift of the parabola with positive
the parabola with positive values shifting the parabola to the right and negative values

consider the 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 − 3)2 + 5 so 𝑎 = 2, ℎ = 3, and 𝑘 = 5 the value of 𝑎 being 2 means

values shifting it upward and negative values shifting it downward to illustrate this

shifted 3 units to the right the value of (k) being 5 means the parabola will be shifted 5
the parabola will be relatively steep the value of (H) being 3 means the parabola will be

units.

9. Think about the standard parabola defined by 𝑦 = 𝑥2. How does the
parabola defined by 𝑦 = −4(𝑥 + 3)2 − 7 compare to the standard
parabola? Describe all of the transformations. Then, draw a reasonable
sketch of both parabolas.
(6 marks)

The parabola defined by 𝑦 = −4(𝑥 + 3)2 − 7 is a transformation of the standard parabola 𝑦 = 𝑥2. It has
undergone several transformations. Firstly, it has been reflected vertically by a factor of -1, resulting in an
upside-down orientation. Secondly, it has been compressed horizontally by a factor of 1/4, making it

has been translated 7 units downward, moving the vertex from (0,0) to (-3,-7). In summary, the parabola 𝑦
narrower. Thirdly, it has been translated 3 units to the left, shifting the vertex from (0,0) to (-3,0). Lastly, it

version of the standard parabola 𝑦 = 𝑥2.

= −4(𝑥 + 3)2 − 7 is a vertically reflected, horizontally compressed, left-shifted, and downward-shifted

10. Factoring is an algebraic process, which is an essential one

in the field of mathematics. Consider the following equation:

𝑦 = x2 + 2x − 8

This equation in factored form can be written as:

𝑦 = (x − 2) (x + 4)

Explain using words and algebra, how the zeros, the axis of symmetry,
and the vertex can be obtained. (6 marks)

(x − 2) (x + 4) = 0

either (x − 2) = 0 or (x + 4) = 0

x−2=0→x=2

x−2=0→x=2

Therefore, the axis of symmetry is the vertical line x = -1

The equation 𝑦 = 2x represents a linear function that has a slope of 2 and passes through the origin (0,0) the graph
of this function is a straight line that extends infinitely in both directions since the slope of the line is positive it
means that as we move to the right along the line the y-values increase similarly as we move to the left along the

touches the x-axis this is because the x-axis represents the set of points where 𝑦 = 0 and the equation 𝑦 = 2x never
line the y-values decrease however the x-values never change sign which means that the line never crosses or

equals 0 for any value of (x) therefore the graph of 𝑦 = 2x can never touch or cross the x-axis regardless of how far
to the left we extend the graph.

Task 4: Thinking (25 marks)

13. For the following graph of the parabola, find its equation in the form
𝑦 = 𝑎 (𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘. Then, express the answer in standard or expanded form,
𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐. (9 marks)

X = 1, Y = 0, H = 3, K = 1
Y = a (x – h)2 + k
0 = a (1 – 3 )2 + 1
0 = a ( -2 )2 + 1
0 = (4) + 1
0 = 4a + 1
-1 = 4a
1/4=a
A = -1 / 4
Y = a (x – h)2 + k
Y = -1 / 4 (x – 3)2 + 1
Multiply two sides by 4
4y = -1 (x – 3)2 + 4
(x – 3) (x – 3)
4y = -1 (x2 – 6x + 9) + 4
4y = -x2 + 6x - 9 + 4
Divide the two sides by 4
Y = -x2 / 4 + 6x / 4 – 5/4
