Experiment Name:

Determination of tensile strength of polymer material.

Abstract:

The physical and mechanical testing of polymers is a vital part of the

product development and production process. Physical and mechanical
testing of polymers ensures that the material complies with industry
specifications. Physical and mechanical testing capabilities are vast and
includes ASTM, ISO, BS or DIN standards using industry specific methods.
The experiment was carried out to determine the tensile properties of a
material which indicate how a material will react to forces being applied
in tension. Tensile tests are also used to find out the modulus of
elasticity, elastic limit, elongation, proportional limit, and reduction in
area. tensile strength, yield point, yield strength and other tensile
properties.

Introduction:
The purpose of this lab report is to determine the tensile strength,
flexural strength, and compressive strength of a given material. These
properties are important for understanding the material's behavior
under different types of loading conditions and are used in a wide range
of engineering applications. The report will provide a detailed
description of the experimental setup, procedures, and results, as well
as an analysis of the data and conclusions.

Tensile strength specifies the point when a material goes from elastic to
plastic deformation. Once a material is in plastic deformation, it can
never recover its original shape.

Measuring tensile strength is important in many industries. It is used in:

To determine batch quality.

To determine consistency in manufacture.

To aid in the design process.

To reduce material costs and achieve lean manufacturing goals.

To ensure compliance with international and industry standards.

Application:

Tensile testing is used to guarantee the quality of components, materials

and finished products within a wide range of industries like,

1. Aerospace Industry

2. Automotive Industry

3. Beverage Indusrty.

4.Construction Industry.

5.Electrical and Electronics Industry.

6.Medical Device Industry.

7. Packaging Industry.

8. Paper and Board Industry.

9. Pharmaceuticals Industry.

10.Plastics, Rubber and Elastomers Industry,

11.Safety, Health, Fitness and Leisure Industry,

12.Textiles Industry.
Result and Calculation:

Figure: stress & strain curve

Figure: Tensile Strength vs Jute composition

The tensile strength was found to be 6.5 MPa.
Discussion:
Since the polymer is a ductile material, it has low tensile strength, low
modulus of elasticity but gives high elongation when it is subjected to a
load.
