Let’s Explore and Discover

What are the uses of parabolas?

The reflecting qualities of a parabola are perfectly illustrated by a satellite disk.

Direct transmission of the signals to the focus results in accurate reflection of those signals
to a receiver. The channels on our television are then created by interpreting and
transmitting these signals.

Definition

A parabola is the set of all points on the plane

which are equidistant from a fixed point (called
the focus) and a fixed line (called the directrix)
(see Figure 1.)

3
Standard Equation of Parabola at (0,0) as the Vertex and Open Upwards

In the given graph,

• the vertex is the point of origin: V(𝟎, 𝟎).
• the focus is at F(𝟎, 𝒄).
• the directrix is the line 𝒚 = −𝒄.
• the focal distance is c. Distance from the
origin to the focus and from the origin to the
directrix.
• the point (𝒙, 𝒚) represents any point on
the curve.
• the axis of symmetry of this parabola is the
𝑦 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠 and the equation is 𝒙 = 𝟎.
• the length of latus rectum that pass
through the focus is 4c.

Standard Equation of Parabola at (0,0) as the Vertex and Opens Downward

In the given graph,

• the vertex is the point of origin: V(0,0).
• the focus of the parabola is at F(0, -c).
• the directrix is the line y = c.
• the focal distance is c. Distance from the
origin to the focus and from the origin to the
directrix.
• the point (x, y) represents any point on the
curve.
• the axis of symmetry of this parabola is the
y-axis and the equation is x = 0.
• the length of latus rectum that passes
through the focus is 4c.

If we interchange the roles of x and y in the equation

𝒙𝟐 = 𝟒𝒄𝒚

the equation becomes

𝒚𝟐 = 𝟒𝒄𝒙, 𝒄>𝟎

4
Standard Equation of Parabola at (0,0) as the Vertex and Opens to the
Right

In the given graph,

• the vertex is the point of origin: V(0, 0).
• the focus of the parabola is at F(𝑐, 0).
• the directrix is the line 𝑥 = −𝑐.
• the focal distance is c. Distance from the
origin to the focus and from the origin to the
directrix.
• the point (𝑥, 𝑦) represents any point on
the curve.
• the axis of symmetry of this parabola is
the 𝑥 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠 and the equation is 𝑦 = 0.
• the length of latus rectum that pass
through the focus is 4c.

Standard Equation of Parabola at (0,0) as the Vertex and Opens to the Left

In the given graph,

• the vertex is the point of origin: V(𝟎, 𝟎).
• the focus is at F(−𝒄, 𝟎).
• the directrix is the line 𝒙 = 𝒄.
• the focal distance is c. Distance from the
origin to the focus and from the origin to the
directrix.
• the point (𝒙, 𝒚) represents any point on the
curve.
• the axis of symmetry of this parabola is the
𝑥 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠 and the equation is 𝒚 = 𝟎.

the focus is 4c.

Examples:
A. Find the equation of a parabola having the given properties:
1. With focus at (1,0) and directrix the line given by 𝑥 = −1.

Solution:

Given the focus at (𝑐, 0), we have F(1,0) giving the value of c equals 1. Since
point (1,0) is located on the x-axis to the right of the point of origin, the
parabola opens to the right. Since the standard equation of a parabola that
opens to the right is 𝑦2 = 4𝑐x, substituting the value of 𝑐 = 1 in the standard
equation, 𝑦2 = 4(1) will give us 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟒𝒙. Therefore, the equation that satisfies
the given properties is
𝒚𝟐 = 𝟒𝒙.

5
2. With vertex at the origin, axis of symmetry is the y-axis and passing through the
point (4, -2).

Solution:
Based on the given conditions; the given point (x, y) equals (4, 2), the axis of
symmetry is vertical and the parabola opens downward. From the standard
equation:
𝑥2 = −4𝑐𝑦
and substituting the value of x and y in the standard equation
𝑥2 = −4𝑐𝑦
42 = −4(−2)
16 = 8𝑐 → 𝑐 = 2
Substituting the value of c in the equation 𝑥2 = −4𝑐𝑦 → 𝑥2 = −4(2)𝑦 will give
𝒙𝟐 = −𝟖𝒚.

B. Draw a sketch of the parabola given the following equations:

3. Equation: 𝑦2 = 4𝑥.

Solution:
First find the value of c. The given
equation is in the form of
𝑦 2 = 4𝑐𝑥 ,
a parabola that opens to the right. From the
given equation
𝑦 2 = 4𝑥
4𝑐 = 4
𝑐=1
Referring to the given:
Vertex: (0,0)
Focus: (𝑐, 0) → (1, 0)
Directrix: 𝑥 = −𝑐 → 𝑥 = −1
Length of Latus Rectum: 4𝑐 = 4(1)
= 4 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠

4. Equation: 𝑥2 = −8𝑦

Solution:
Find the value of c first. The equation is
given in the form of
𝑥 2 = −4𝑐𝑦 ,
a parabola that opens downward. From the
given equation
𝑥 2 = −8𝑦
−4𝑐 = −8 → 𝑐 = 2
Based on the given:
Vertex: (0,0)
Focus: (0, −𝑐) → (0, −2)
Directrix: 𝑦 = 𝑐 → 𝑦 = 2
Length of Latus Rectum: 4𝑐 = 4(2)
= 8𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠

PARABOLA WITH CENTER AT (h, k)

Consider the parabolas with vertex at (𝒉, 𝒌) and whose axis of symmetry is the line
𝒙 = 𝒉.
Thus, the standard equation of a parabola with vertex at (𝒉, 𝒌) can be written in
any of the following forms.
If the parabola opens upward, then the standard equation is
(𝒙 − 𝒉)𝟐 = 𝟒𝒄(𝒚 − 𝒌), 𝒄 > 𝟎
where the focus is on the line 𝒙 = 𝒉 and is 𝒄 units above the vertex at (𝒉, 𝒌).
If the parabola opens downward, then the standard equation is
(𝒙 − 𝒉)𝟐 = −𝟒𝒄(𝒚 − 𝒌), 𝒄>𝟎
where the focus is on the line 𝒙 = 𝒉 and is 𝒄 units below the vertex at (𝒉, 𝒌).

If the parabola opens to the right, then the standard equation is

(𝒚 − 𝒌)𝟐 = (𝒙 − 𝒉), 𝒄>0
where the focus is on the line 𝒚 = 𝒌 and is 𝒄 units to the right of the vertex at (𝒉, 𝒌).

If the parabola opens to the left, then the standard equation is

(𝒚 − 𝒌)𝟐 = −𝟒𝒄(𝒙 − 𝒉), 𝒄>𝟎
where the focus is on the line 𝒚 = 𝒌 and is 𝒄 units to the left of the vertex at (𝒉, 𝒌).

Note the following observations:

• If the 𝒙-part is squared, the parabola is vertical; if the 𝒚 -part is squared, the
parabola is horizontal.
• If the coefficient on the right term part is positive, the parabola opens upward or to
the right; if negative, the parabola opens downward or to the left.

Example 1.

Draw the parabola with equation (𝒙 − 𝟐)𝟐 = 𝟏𝟐(𝒚 − 𝟏).

Solution: To solve the given equation, we need to find the value of c. The given equation is
written in the form
(𝑥 − ℎ)2 = 4𝑐(𝑦 − 𝑘), with graph that
opens upward. Based on the given,
(𝑥 − 2)2 = 12(𝑦 − 1)
4𝑐 = 12 → 𝑐 = 3
Based on the given:
Vertex (ℎ, 𝑘): (2,1)
Focus (ℎ, 𝑘 + 𝑐): (2, 1 + 3) → (2,4)
Directrix: 𝑦 = 𝑘 − 𝑐
𝑦 = 1 − 3 → 𝑦 = −2
Length of Latus Rectum: 4𝑐
4(3) = 12 units
Axis of Symmetry: 𝑥 = ℎ → 𝑥 = 2

Example 2.
Draw the graph of (𝒙 + 𝟒)𝟐 = −𝟒(𝒚 − 𝟑).

Solution: To solve the given equation, first find the value of c. The given equation is written
in the
(𝑥 − ℎ)2 = −4𝑐(𝑦 − 𝑘), an equation with
Graph that opens downward. From the given
equation
(𝑥 + 4)2 = −4(𝑦 − 3)
−4𝑐 = −4 → 𝑐 = 1
Other values include:
Vertex (ℎ, 𝑘): (−4,3)
Focus (ℎ, 𝑘 − 𝑐): (−4, 3 − 1) → (−4, 2)
Directrix: 𝑦 = 𝑘 + 𝑐
𝑦=3+1→𝑦=4
Length of Latus Rectum: 4𝑐
4(1)
= 4 units
Axis of Symmetry: 𝑥 = ℎ → 𝑥 = −4
