H82PME – Worksheet 1

SETTLING

1. A particle of equivalent volume diameter 0.5 mm, density 2000 kg/m 3

and sphericity 0.6 falls freely under gravity in a fluid of density 1.6 kg/m 3
and viscosity 2x10-5 Pa s. Estimate the terminal velocity reached by the
particle.
Answer: 1 m/s

2. Spherical particles of density 2500 kg/m 3 and in the size range 20-100
μm are fed continuously into a stream of water (density 1000 kg/m 3 and
viscosity 0.001 Pa s) flowing upwards in a vertical, large diameter pipe.
What maximum water velocity is required to ensure that no particles of
diameter greater than 60 μm are carried upwards with water?
Answer: 2.943 x 10-3 m/s

4. Water is pumped (Q=20L/s) from the bottom of a cylindrical tank (1 m

diameter) filled with a suspension of solid particles in water, so that the
water overflows through its upper part. a) Assuming spherical particles
of density 2402 kg/m3, from which size are they dragged out of the
tank? b) Which would be the required water flowrate to drag the
particles <500 μm out of the tank?
Answer: a) 0.24 mm, b) 63 L/s

5. In a mining operation, it is desired to carry out a first classification of

the ground mineral, formed by metallic particles (𝜌𝑃=6g/cm3) and non-
metallic particles (𝜌𝑃=2g/cm3). To carry out the separation, the mineral
is thrown in the middle part of a tank in which water is raised. At which
velocity should the water rise to drag all particles with a size ≤1 mm?
Answer: 0.39 m/s
