1. State Gauss’s law in electrostatics. Also write Gauss’s law for magnetism and what is its
significance?
2. Write any two properties of magnetic field lines. Why do two magnetic field lines of a magnet
not cross each other?
3. An arbitrary surface encloses a dipole. What is the electric flux through this surface?
4. Given a uniform electric field E = 5 ×103i^ N/C, find the flux of this field through a square of 10
cm on a side whose plane is parallel to Y–Z plane. What would be the flux through the same
square if the plane makes a 30 degree angle with the X axis?
5. Represent graphically the variation of electric field with distance, from a uniformly charged plane
sheet.
6. What is electrostatic shielding? How is this property used in actual practice ? Is the potential in
the cavity of a charged conductor zero?
7. A steady current flows in a metallic conductor of non uniform cross section. Which of these
quantities is constant along the conductor; current, current density and drift speed.
8. Briefly explain how a galvanometer is converted into an ammeter. A galvanometer coil has a
resistance of 15 ohm and the metre shows full scale deflection for a current of 4 mA. How will
you convert the metre into an ammeter of range 0 to 6 A?
10. Derive an expression for the magnetic field at a point on the axis of a current carrying circular
loop.
11. Derive an expression for the magnetic field at a point on the axis of a long solenoid with closely
wound turns.
12. Derive an expression for the force per unit length between two long straight parallel current
carrying conductors. Hence define SI unit of current (1 ampere).
13. Draw the well labelled diagram of a moving coil galvanometer and write its principle and
working. Explain the role of cylindrical soft iron core. Define current sensitivity and voltage
sensitivity.
14. Define magnetic susceptibility. The susceptibility of a magnetic material is -4.2 × 10-6. Name
the type of magnetic materials it represents.
15. An element ∆l = ∆xi^ is placed at the origin and carries a large current I = 10 A . What is the
magnetic field on they-axis at a distance of 0.5 m. ∆x = 1 cm.
16. Consider a tightly wound 100 turn coil of radius 10 cm, carrying a current of 1 A. What is the
magnitude of the magnetic field at the centre of the coil?
17. A solenoid of length 0.5 m has a radius of 1 cm and is made up of 500 turns. It carries a current
of 5 A. What is the magnitude of the magnetic field inside the solenoid?
18. A long straight wire carries a current of 35 A. What is the magnitudeof the field B at a point 20
cm from the wire?
19. A rectangular coil of size 3.0 cm × 4.0 cm and having 100 turns, is pivoted about the z axis as
shown in the figure. The coil carries an electric current of 2.0 A and a magnetic field of 1.0 T is
present along the y axis. Find the torque acting on the coil if the side in the x -y plane makes an
angle θ = 370with the x axis.
20. Two long straightwires, each carrying an electric current of 5.0 A, are kept parallel to each other
at a separation of 2.5 cm. Find the magnitude of the magnetic force experienced by 10 cm of a
wire.
21. A long solenoid is formed by winding 20 turns/ cm. What current is necessary to produce a
magnetic field of 20 mT inside the solenoid?
22. The magnetic field B due to a current carrying circular loop of radius 12 cm at its centre is 0.50
× 10-4 T. Find the magnetic field due to this loop at a point on the axis at a distance of 5.0 cm
from the centre.
23. A solenoid has a core of a material with relative permeability 400. The windings of the solenoid
are insulated from the core and carry a current of 2A. If the number of turns is 1000
permetre, calculate (a) H, (b) M, (c) B
24. Draw the magnetic field lines for a current carrying solenoid when a rod made of a) copper, b)
aluminium and c) iron are inserted within the solenoid.
25. Define the term self inductance. Obtain the expression for the magnetic energy stored in an
inductor of self inductance L to build up a current I through it.
26. Write Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction. Explain Lenz’s law by a suitable
illustration.
27. Derive an expression for the mutual inductance of two long coaxial solenoid of same length
wound over the other.
28. Figure shows planar loops of different shapes moving out of or into a region of a
magnetic field which is directed normal to the plane of the loop away from the reader.
Determine the direction of induced current in each loop using Lenz’s law.
29. A square loop of side 10 cm and resistance 0.5 Ω isplaced vertically in the east-west
plane. A uniform magnetic field of 0.10 T is set up across the plane in the north-east
direction. The magnetic field is decreased to zero in 0.70 s at a steady rate. Determinethe
magnitudes of induced emf and current during this time-interval.
30. Current in a circuit falls from 5.0 A to 0.0 A in 0.1 s. If an average emf of 200 V induced, give
an estimate of the self-inductance of the circuit.
31. A pair of adjacent coils has a mutual inductance of 1.5 H. If the current in one coil
changes from 0 to 20 A in 0.5 s, what is thechange of flux linkage with the other
coil?
32. A long solenoid with 15 turns per cm has a small loop of area 2.0 cm2placed inside the solenoid
normal to its axis. If the current carriedby the solenoid changes steadily from 2.0 A to 4.0 A
in 0.1 s, what is the induced emf in the loop while the current is changing?
