DATA TABULATION

M. K. Mustapha
Statistical Tables Tabulation &
Classification
Statistical Tables
A statistical table is an orderly and logical arrangement of data into
rows and columns, and it attempts to present the voluminous and
heterogeneous data in a condensed and homogeneous form.
This process of arranging the data into groups or classes according to
resemblances and similarities is technically called classification. Thus,
classification of the data is preliminary to its tabulation. It is thus the
first step in tabulation because the items with similarities must be
brought together before the data are presented in the form of a
‘table’.
Functions of Classification

It condenses the data

It allows for a quick visual interpretation of the data
It facilitates comparisons
It helps to study the relationships
It facilitates the statistical treatment of the data
Rules for Classification

It should be unambiguous
It should be exhaustive and mutually exclusive
It should be stable/consistent
Frequency Categorical Variables
Distribution
Frequency Distribution
of Categorical Data
A frequency distribution of a categorical
variable lists all categories and the number
of elements that belong to each of the
categories.
The “Busiest Port in Westoros” example
(next slide) illustrates how a frequency
distribution table is constructed for a
categorical variable.
Example: The Busiest
Port in Westoros
Victoria Port is said to be the busiest port in
Westoros. Different types of ships are known to
berth there.
In the year 2021, 178 ships were recorded to have
berthed at Victoria port between 1st of January to
31st of December.
Click here to view and download the dataset
recorded by the port’s management.
You are required to summarise and present the
dataset using a frequency distribution table.
Solution
Ship Type Frequency Relative Frequency (%)
Bulk Carrier 30 17
Container Ship 39 22
Naval Ship 23 13
Offshore Ship 18 10
Passenger Ship 48 27
Special Purpose Ship 20 11
Total 178 100

Example: Minions-High

Minions-High is a high school located at the heart of Numen, Middle-Earth.

Mr. Doofree is a science teacher at Minions-High.
Just before the midterm break, he conducted a midterm test for his final year
students (50 of them). Test had a maximum score points of 60.
After grading the test scripts of all 50 students, Mr. Doofree is required to
present a report on the students’ overall performance.
The test results are shown in the next slide.
