Statistical Tables Tabulation &
Classification
Statistical Tables
A statistical table is an orderly and logical arrangement of data into
rows and columns, and it attempts to present the voluminous and
heterogeneous data in a condensed and homogeneous form.
This process of arranging the data into groups or classes according to
resemblances and similarities is technically called classification. Thus,
classification of the data is preliminary to its tabulation. It is thus the
first step in tabulation because the items with similarities must be
brought together before the data are presented in the form of a
‘table’.
Functions of Classification
It should be unambiguous
It should be exhaustive and mutually exclusive
It should be stable/consistent

Frequency Distribution
of Categorical Data
A frequency distribution of a categorical
variable lists all categories and the number
of elements that belong to each of the
categories.
The “Busiest Port in Westoros” example
(next slide) illustrates how a frequency
distribution table is constructed for a
categorical variable.
Example: The Busiest
Port in Westoros
Victoria Port is said to be the busiest port in
Westoros. Different types of ships are known to
berth there.
In the year 2021, 178 ships were recorded to have
berthed at Victoria port between 1st of January to
31st of December.
Click here to view and download the dataset
recorded by the port’s management.
You are required to summarise and present the
dataset using a frequency distribution table.
