Section A [64 marks]

Answer all the questions in this section .

1. (a) Simplify as far as possible (2x - 5) – (x – 3). [3]

(b) Given that p = q – t


r + t,

(i) calculate the value of p when q = 3, t = -5 and r = 2,


(ii) express t in terms of p, q and r. [5]

(c) Solve the simultaneous equations

4x – 2y = 5,

x+y=-¼. [3]

2. (a) Given that m = 3 x 102 and n = 5 x 10-4, express in standard


form

(i) mn,

(ii) / n. [3]

(b) Jenny knits jerseys for her aunt. In one week, she knits 8 jerseys
which are sold at $750,00 each. She is paid a basic weekly
wage of $500,00 plus a commission of 2 ½% per jersey.
Calculate
(i) her commission in one week,
(ii) her total weekly earnings. [3]

(c) A bank exchanges South African rands for Zimbabwean dollars


at the rate of R1 to Z$6,25.

Calculate
(i) the amount received in rands for $1 250,00, [2]
(ii) the amount received in dollars for R80. [2]

3. An oil company delivers petrol in a cylindrical container of diameter


1,8m and length 4,9m. David, a garage owner, orders 13 000 litres of petrol
at $43,80 per litre.

(a) Calculate

(i) the cost of petrol ordered by David, [2]


(ii) the capacity, in litres, of the cylindrical container, [3]
(iii) the short-fall, in litres, of the petrol delivered by the oil
company, [1]

(b) Express this short-fall in (a)(iii) as a percentage correct to the


nearest whole number. [2]

(c) One of David’s underground tanks can hold 10 500 litres of


petrol. Given that petrol is pumped into this tank at the rate of 5
litres per second, calculate the number of minutes it will taken
to fill the underground tank. [2]

In the diagram, A, B, C and D are points on the circumference of a circle
with AB = BC. AT and CT are tangents to the circle and TAB = 34º.
Find

(i) ADB,

(ii) BDC,

(iii) ABC,

(iv) BCT,

(v) ATC. [7]

(b)

In the diagram, SR is parallel to PQ, and SQ and PR intersect at T. Given


that PT = 10cm, RT = 2,5 cm, and PQ = 16cm, calculate

(i) SR,

(ii) the ratio of the area of triangle RTS to the area of triangle PTQ,

(iii) the ratio of the area of triangle PTQ to the area of triangle QTR. [6]
5. (a)

In the diagram, OACB is a rectangle and X and Y are mid-points of BC and


CA respectively. It is given that OA = 2a and XY = a-b.

Express in terms of a and / or b

(i) XC,
(ii) OB,
(iii) AB. [3]

(b) ξ = {x: x is an integer 10 ≤ x ≤ 100}.

A = {x: x is a multiple of 17}.

B = {x: x divided by 15 leaves a remainder of 7}.

Find

(i) n(A),
(ii) the largest member of B,
(iii) n(A‫ ﮟ‬B). [3]
(c)

The Venn diagram shows two sets R and S such that R ‫ ﮟ‬S = ξ.

On separate copies of the diagram, shade

(i) R’‫ ﮟ‬S,


(ii) R’ ∩ S. [3]

6. Answer the whole of this question on a sheet of plain paper.

Use ruler and compasses only for all constructions and show clearly
all the constructor, lines and arcs.

(a) Construct, on a single diagram,

(i) the quadrilateral ABCD with AB = 5cm, DAB = 60º,


ABC = 135º, AD = 9cm and BC = 6,5 cm, [4]

(ii) the locus of points that are 2cm from AD, [3]

(iii) the locus of points equidistant from BC and CD. [2]

(b) Label clearly the points X and Y which are 2cm from AD and
equidistant from BC and CD. [2]
Section B [36 marks]

Answer three questions in this section.

The diagram shows three village Centre’s, A, B and C joined by straight


roads with AB = 8km, AC = 5,5 km and CAB = 70º. Calculate

(a) the area, in km2, bounded by the three roads, [3]

(b) the length of the road BC, [4]

(c) the time is would take to walk directly from A to C at an average


speed of 1,5 m/s, giving the answer correct to the nearest minute,
[3]

(d) the shortest distance from C to AB.

8.

In this question take π to be 22/7.

The diagram above represents the cross-section of a barn. The width is 10m,
the vertical sides PT and RS are each 15m and the roof PQR is an arc
of a circle, centre O, with POR = 90º.

(a) Calculate

(i) the radius of the sector PQRO,


(ii) the area of the cross-section. [6]

(b) Given that the barn is 30m long, calculate

(i) the volume of the barn,


(ii) the cost of painting the outside of the roof, correct to the nearest
$10, at $250 per square metre. [6]

9. (a) Given that log102x – log10 (x – 4) = 1,

find the value of x. [4]

(b) (i) Given that 22(x2-3) x 23x = 16, show that


2x2 + 3x – 10 = 0. [3]

(ii) Solve the equation 2x3 + 3x – 10 = 0, giving the answers


to two decimal places. [5]
10. Answer the whole of this question on a sheet of graph paper.

The following is an incomplete table of values for the curve y = 12/ξ -1

(a) Calculate the value of p and the value of q. [2]

(b) Using a scale of 2cm to represent 1 unit on the x – axis and 2cm
to represent 2 units on the y – axis, draw the graph of y = 12/x –
1 for 1 ≤ x ≤ 8. [4]

(c) Use your graph to estimate

(i) the gradient of the curve when x = 2,


(ii) the area of the region between the curve, the x – axis and
the lines x = 3 and x = 6. [4]

(d) Using the same axes draw the graph of y = x + 4 and use your
graphs to estimate the solution of the equation 12/x -1 = x + 4.

11. Answer the whole of this question on a sheet of graph paper.

The line AB has coordinates A (2, 2) and B (2, 6).

Using a scale of 2cm to represent 2 units on each axis, draw axes for
values of x and y in the ranges – 6 ≤ x ≤ 10 and -4 ≤ y ≤ 16.

(a) Draw and label the line AB. [1]

(b) A1B1 is the image of AB under an enlargement centre O, scale


factor 2,5.

(i) Draw and label the line A1B1.


(ii) Write down the matrix that represents this
transformation. [4]

(c) The line A2A2 has coordinates A2 (-2, -2) and B2 (-6, -2).

(i) Draw and label the line A2B2.


(ii) Describe fully the single transformation that maps AB
onto A2B2. [3]

(d) The transformation T is represented by the matrix (2 -1) and


(5 0)

AB onto A2B3.

(i) Calculate the coordinates of A2 and B3.


(ii) Draw and label the line A3B3.
(iii) Describe fully the single transformation T. [4]

(b) A competitor who caught more than 40 fish won $5 000 and a
competitor who caught more than 30 fish but at most 40 fish
won $2 000.

Calculate

(i) the number of competitors who won $5 000, [2]

(ii) the percentage of competitors who won $2 000. [3]

(c) Giving the answer as a fraction in its lowest terms, calculate

(i) the probability that one competitor, chosen at random,


caught at most 10 fish, [2]

(ii) the probability that two competitors, chosen at random,


caught more than 30 fish.
