VECTOR ALGEBRA AND DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

TUTORIAL SET

May 25, 2024

1. Find the equation of a plane containing the points I (4,-3, 2), J (-3, -1, 1) and K (4, -2, 8).

2. Suppose that a and b are vectors such that

A = (x + y)a + (2x + y + 1)band

B = (y − 2x + 2)a + (2x − 3y + 1)b

Find x and y such that 3A=2B.

3. Write down the equation of the plane with points S (0, 0, 0), T (3, 4, -2), and R (-1, -2, -1).

4. Determine the points of intersection of the line K= µ(3i + j + 2k) and the plane
ρ1 = (1 − t − s)i + 2tj + 3sk

5. Given p (1, 0, -1), q (2, 1, 1) and r (1, 1, 1), find x such that p is perpendicular to q + r.

6. If A is a unit vector, find the magnitude of the vector B such that B 2 - A2 = 8.

1
Hint: Recall that x2 = |x|2 and since A is a unit vector, then |A| =1

7. Find a unit vector perpendicular to the vectors a + b and a - b where

a = 3i + 2j + 2k and b = i + 2j − 2k.

8. Show that the lines 7x + 4y − 4z + 30 = 0, 36x − 51y + 12z + 17 = 0, 14x + 8y − 8z − 12 = 0 and

12x − 17y + 4z − 3 = 0 form faces of a rectangular parallelepiped.

9. Calculate the angle between the vectors (2i − j + k) and (3i + 4j − k).
