Questions to be discussed in-tutorial, Sep 26. Do not submit these to Crowdmark!

1. Imagine you are in a midterm and cannot use any graphing program. Just with your
memorized knowledge of toolkit functions and transformations, sketch a decent graph of

(
|x + 1| − 1 if x < 1
f (x) =
−(x − 1)3 if x ≥ 1
Based on your graph, is this function invertible?

2. Elsa, Anna and Olaf are discussing the functionf (x) = x3 − x + 3.

Elsa says: I computed that f (−1) = 3, and f (1) = 3. So f (−x) = f (x), so this function is even.
Anna says: I computed that f (−2) = −3, and f (2) = 9. So for x = 2, f (−x) ̸= −f (x), so this
function is not odd.
Olaf says: How nice that you two agree. The function is not odd, so it must be even.

a. Is Elsa correct? If not, what is her mistake?

b. Is Anna correct? If not, what is her mistake?

c. Is Olaf correct? If not, what is his mistake?

3. I have a function f which I keep secret from you. All you know is that its graph goes
through the points (1, 3), (2, 6), (3, 4), and (4, 4). Just with this, you should be able to answer:

a) Can this function f be invertible? If yes, what is f −1 (3)?

What is the average rate of change of that function f ...

b) on the interval [1, 2]?

c) on the interval [1, 3]?

d) on the interval [3, 4]?

1.
a. (1.5 points) For what x is −|x − 3| + 2 ≥ 0? State your answer in interval notation.

b. (1.5 point) With the help of transformations, sketch the graph of

f (x) = −|x − 3| + 2.

In your graph, mark clearly where the kink is, and where the graph crosses the x-axis. Also,
indicate clearly how your solution to part a matches your graph.

2.
a. (1.5 points) The function f (x) = 2x − 6 is invertible. What is its inverse function f −1 (x)?

b. (1.5 points)

Say I have a function which I keep secret from you. All you know is that its
domain is , it is an even function. Just with this information, can you decide whether this
function is invertible?
(If you think such a function must be invertible, give a short reason for that. If you think such
a function cannot be invertible, give a short reason for that. If you think one cannot decide, you
have to give two examples of such functions, one invertible and the other not.)
