MapMaster for Chapter 4

To access the MapMaster tool follow the instructions below. **Tip be careful with the zoom, it
sticks and can lock up the tool.

1. Click on MyLab and Mastering in the table of contents on the left-hand side.

2. Under “Student Links” click more, then click “Study Area”.

3. A new tab will open with the Pearson Study Area. On the left-hand side in the table of
contents, click on MapMaster 2.0. Then click on the blue button that says “MapMaster 2.0.” A
new tab will open with the MapMaster tool. Click on the green arrow on the left (green tab) this
opens the selection menu. Follow the instructions below.

4. Global warming is increasing sea-surface temperatures. As sea-surface temperatures increase,

more water vapor is available to power tropical cyclones. Under “Choose a theme” select:
Physical Environment. Under “Refine by Geography” select: all geographies. Different layers
will appear in a list below. Select the “Global Mean Temperature for July” layer. Make sure the
legend on the right is open and that all boxes have checks. This layer shows the average global
temperatures (both on land and for the sea surface) in degrees Celsius for the month of July.

5. Now scroll down the list on the left and select “Global Surface Warming Worst-Case
Projections” from the menu and click the option to split map window. You should now see two
maps, one with the average temperatures for July and one with the projected increase of
temperature in degrees Celsius. If you add the projected increase to the average temperature you
will get the new projected temperature for a location due to climate change based on IPCC
projections. Take a screenshot of the maps and put them into a word document and answer the
questions below. Save the word.doc and upload it to this assignment.

Questions:

1. What is the temperature of the warmest projected sea-surface temperature? How much
warmer than today is that?

The warmest projected sea-surface is in Persian Gult and Red Sea, the temperature can be range
to 24 to upto 33 celsius. It is 30 degree celsius warmer than today.

2. Which regions of the world will be most affected by sea-surface temperature increases?
What are some countries in the path of these stronger tropical cyclones, based on the
projected temperatures and the tropical cyclones paths shown in the figure below?
I think the Asian regions would be most affected by sea-surface temperature increases. Some
countries for the path or stronger tropical cyclones would be India, Australia, China, Japan,
Mexico, and Vietnam.
