Network Tools and Descriptions
Wire cutters or side cutters
Crimper
Wire cutters are used to cut wires. A crimper is used to attach connectors
Also known as side-cutters, these to wires. The crimper tool shown here
wire cutters are specifically can attach RJ-45 connectors to

copper wire. and RJ-11 connectors to telephone
cables used for land lines.

Wire strippers

Wire strippers are used to remove the

insulation from wire so that it can be
twisted to other wires or crimped to
connectors to make a cable. Wire strippers
typically come with a variety of notches Punch down tool – used to terminate

Multimeter
A multimeter is a device that can take many types of
measurements. It measures AC/DC voltage, electric current,
and other electrical characteristics to test the integrity of
circuits and the quality of electricity in computer components.

Console Cable

A Console Cable is a special type of cable used to establish a

direct communication link between a computer (usually a
laptop) and a networking device such as a router, switch,
firewall, or any other device that supports console management.
It allows network administrators and engineers to configure,
manage, and troubleshoot network equipment, especially when
the device is inaccessible over the network.

Types of Console Cables:

• RJ-45 to DB-9 Console Cable

• USB to RJ-45 Console Cable
• USB to Mini-USB or Micro-USB Console Cable
Console port
A console port is a special port on a network device that
allows direct access to its command-line interface (CLI)
for administrative tasks. Unlike network ports (which are
used for regular data traffic), the console port is strictly for
management purposes and doesn’t pass any network
data.

Types of Console Ports:

• RJ-45 Console Port
• USB Console Port
• DB-9 Serial Port
STEP BY STEP CONSOLE PORT CONNECTION

1. Plug your console cable to the router or switch’s console port.

2. Plug your console cable’s other side to your computer’s serial port. ( You may need a
USB converter if you don’t have a serial port )

3. Open a connection software from your PC ( Like Putty , Secure CRT etc. )

4. Select “serial” connection and right COM port. ( You can find your COM port by right
clicking “my computer”  properties  device manager )

5. Click connect

6. Click “Enter” and that’s all. You are in the device anymore !
