Data storage and Software consideration when starting an E-commerce business.

Data storage devices for the information you have processed and the software you will use in your
computer system vary greatly depending on your workload and the programs you are working on.
Different businesses require different software and varied storage options.

A. Storage devices
They are used as online extensions to the main memory and are also used for office storage of programs
and data. Gupta, C. P., &Goyal, K. K (2020). As an E-commerce business, we keep track of whatever we
have added to the website for our clients and ensure space for more. We need enough storage space
and this necessitates the need to have reliable storage devices with enough space.

The storage devices can be classified into DASD and SASD.

The DASD stands for Direct Access Storage Device. The user has full access to any record stored here
freely and directly for instance if a user wants to access item number 50 he will be directed to the
number without opening other numbers. Examples of these are hard disks, DVDs, CDs, and floppy discs.

The SASD stands for Sequential Access Storage Devices. The user cannot access any information stored
directly but will have to move step by step. For example, if a user wants to access item number 50 then
he has to pass through number 49 to reach 50 and that is why it is called sequential access.

Sheldon, R., Castagna, R., Yu, J. (2021). Secondary storage is persistent storage for noncritical data that
doesn’t need to be accessed as frequently as data in primary storage or doesn’t have the same
availability requirements. The secondary storage is required to play the following roles

a) Backup in case the e-business experiences malicious attacks data can always be recovered.
b) Archival store for information that is no longer accessed with regularity but must be maintained.
c) Noncritical active data such as business files, legal documents, or emails that are already
answered but still need them at a close hand in case they are needed.

Examples of different storage device inventions

1. Floppy disk- got its name from the flexible materials (Mylar plastic coated with magnetic oxide)
used to make it.
2. Hard disk – could hold bulk data storage before the invention of even better options.
3. Optical disk- a quick and fast storage device using laser light to read it. They are available in
a) CD/CD-ROM (Compact Disk or Read Only Memory)
b) CD-R (writable CD)
c) CD-RW (Rewritable CD)
d) DVD/DVD-ROM (Digital Versatile Disc/DVD Read Only Memory)
e) DVD DL (Double layer)
f) BD-R (Blue-ray disk)
4. Pen Drive- a portable storage device
5. Flash memory – it can be reprogrammed and erased with ease.
B. Software Selection
A software is the program that instructs a computer how to process data and generate output.
Gupta, C. P., & Goyal, K.K. (2020).

Understanding the different types of software will enable you to pick the right choice for your
business. For example;

a) System software – will receive instructions and data from the user and run them in the
system, store them, and produce them whenever required by the user. Without this, a
computer system cannot communicate with the user.
b) Application software – an e-commerce website keeps on receiving attacks from the site.
You will be advised to buy an anti-attacks program to fight the attacks. The type of software
that you buy is specific to fighting the attacks. This type of software is called application
software. The software will run within the system software.
c) Embedded software – software that is installed to run specific things. E-commerce business
will need a payment software system for your clients to pay using cards.
C. Challenges and considerations.
Different storage devices are measured and priced according to the capacity that they can hold.
However, we may want to have a device that will always carry all that we may have.

Since this is an online platform, it may experience attacks every time, and data recovery whenever the
attacks happen will be thoughtful.

A software that will be easy for clients to work with will be very appropriate because most clients may
not be able to understand the complex platforms.
